Overview

Kick-Ass 4K (2010)

Dave Lizewski, a comic-book fanboy, decides to take his obsession as inspiration to become a real-life superhero. As any good superhero would, he chooses a new name -- Kick-Ass -- assembles a suit and mask to wear, and gets to work fighting crime. There's only one problem standing in his way: Kick-Ass has absolutely no superpowers. His life is forever changed as he inspires a subculture of copy cats, is hunted by assorted violent and unpleasant characters, and meets up with a pair of crazed vigilantes, including an 11-year-old sword-wielding dynamo, Hit Girl and her father, Big Daddy.

Kick-Ass 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman May 14, 2025

Lionsgate Limited is potentially throwing prospective consumers for yet another loop, at least for those looking for some kind of "branding" consistency in their releases, which are especially unusual this month. Among the peculiarities is this "15th Anniversary" edition of Kick-Ass in new SteelBook packaging, a film which Lionsgate previously released in a combo 4K / 1080 package way back in 2017 (I link to my review, below). While the disc in this package has new silk screened art and boots to a new menu image, while also offering some new supplements, presentationally this struck me as identical to the previous release. Adding to the "intrigue" (at least for marketing majors) is the fact that in this particular instance, Lionsgate does not include a 1080 disc. Because this is basically a repackaging, this review will simply offer hi res photos of the SteelBook, as well as a list of supplements.

As mentioned above, Lionsgate offered a wide release in standard packaging of Kick-Ass in both 4K and 1080 formats back in 2017. My Kick-Ass 4K Blu-ray review offers my assessment of that release.

Kick-Ass 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  5.0 of 5

I've marked the new supplements with an asterisk (*).

  • Audio Commentary with Writer / Director Matthew Vaughn

  • Pure Cinematic Fun* (HD; 20:04) is a fun retrospective with some enjoyable interviews and behind the scenes footage (some of which have pretty bad combing artifacts for some reason).

  • Still Kicking Ass* (HD; 19:23) is another new piece, focusing on stunts.

  • The Work of Art* (HD; 13:08) features an engaging Mark Millar.

  • Physical Media Kicks Ass* (HD; 1:41) offers Matthew Vaughn touting the positives of having a home library.

  • Teaser Trailer (HD; 1:42)

  • A New Kind of Superhero: The Making of Kick-Ass (HD; 1:53:04)

  • It's On!: The Comic Book Origin of Kick-Ass (HD; 20:36)

  • Official Trailer (HD; 2:29)

  • "Hit Girl" Official Red Band Trailer (HD; 1:22)

Additionally, this comes packaged in an exclusive new SteelBook which is one of the more wonderfully colorful that Lionsgate Limited has offered. Somewhat cheekily, the Mylar O-ring offers masks over the central trio (see photo 1), but when removed, all of the main characters are seen in all of their gobsmackingly bright glory spread across the front and rear panels. The interior panels can be seen in the sixth and seventh photos I've uploaded to accompany this review.

Kick-Ass 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

This particular Lionsgate Limited release is probably inevitably going to be a trade off of sorts for fans. The new supplements and the SteelBook packaging are definite pluses, but no 1080 disc and the loss of at least some supplements is a potential minus. Taken on the whole, Recommended.
