KEIJO! is a butt-tastic sports meets fan-service anime with all its jiggly parts on the line. Developed by the production committee of Atsushi Aitani (Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto, Girlish Number), Jun Fukuda (Cat Planet Cuties, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure), Nobuhiro Nakayama (A Certain Magical Index, Girls Beyond the Wasteland), Ryutaro Usukura (Peter Grill and the Philosopher's Time, Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle), Takatoshi Chino (Clockwork Planet, Heroic Age), Takema Okamura (The Devil Is a Part-Timer!, Laid-Back Camp), and Toshiyasu Hayashi (The Demon Girl Next Door, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure), KEIJO! showcases ladies engaged in butt-on-butt or butt-on-breast battles. Created by Daichi Sorayomi, the series is aimed squarely at audiences seeking some entertaining booty. Featuring animation by studio Xebec (Future Card Buddyfight, Broken Blade), KEIJO! is a fan-service extravaganza.
Nozomi Kaminashi (Lynn) is a big-breasted gal with an interest in the sport of Keijo. Attending the Setouchi Keijo Training School, Nozomi must learn how to master the skills necessary to excel in mastering Keijo – the epic battle of butts and boobs as girls thrust themselves against one another in bosom competition! Who’s butt or boob will lead to victory on the battlefield? With another school of trained Keijo warriors up against the training school, Nozomi will stop at nothing to push her boobs out.
The series central focus is on the babes of the series duking it out: thrashing their bodies against each other, tossing boobs against boobs and butts against butts. The series isn’t as heavily focused upon character development as some anime series and there is a bigger aim towards the sports arena. Characters duke it out to be the best of all.
The character designs by Keiya Nakano (AOKANA: Four Rhythm Across the Blue, Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky) are surprisingly worthwhile and not as generic and some viewers may expect. The designs are creative and provide the series with a more interesting visual style. The character designs work for the world of the anime.
"Line up!"
The art direction by Hirofumi Sakagami (City Hunter: Shinjuku Private Eyes, Record of Grancrest War) and Hiroshi Katō (Cat Planet Cuties, Battle Arena Toshinden) places a big emphasis on the fan-service. The animators involved in the series make it a priority to show the boobies jiggling as much as is possible. The animators take full advantage of this challenge and make it their main goal: to highlight the bodies of the babes of KEIJO! as much as humanly possible. Who can jiggle the most? The animators take the challenge and amp up the body-to-body ratio with as much of a splash as one can imagine.
The cinematography by Takuma Morooka (Fafner THE BEYOND, Argevollen) is one of the best strengths of the series. The visuals enhance the production and the scale of the series. The animation is bright, colorful, and engaging. There is a sense of energy to the cinematographic style (rather than a more morbid or dark visual aesthetic).
The score composed by Hayato Matsuo (Magic Knight Rayearth, Captain Tsubasa) is surprisingly decent and makes the series a bit more entertaining. The music adds to the (ahem) sports scenes and gives the production more excitement. Matsuo is a gifted composer and the effort here is commendable and arguably better than most would expect for the genre.
Written by Takao Kato (MegaMan NT Warrior, Rockman.EXE Beast+), KEIJO! is a series without a big scope or scale in the screenwriting department. The storytelling provides what the audiences would expect. Kato delivers the goods.
Directed by Hideya Takahashi (Anonymous Noise, Fantasista Stella), KEIJO! is all about the “sports” battles. Director Takahashi makes sure to highlight the women-on-women battles with as much enthusiasm as a spectator. The results? An anime with plenty for fan-service aficionados to be entertained by.
Arriving on Blu-ray from Funimation, KEIJO! is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high definition in the original television aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The release showcases excellent color and detail. The color reproduction is one of the most wonderful highlights of the release – the art style is bright, vivid, and hypnotic with crisp background art, character designs, and line art. The action is also well showcased. The animation shines. The release doesn't struggle with encoding issues and looks quite excellent. A solid effort from Funimation.
The release includes a selection of lossless audio options: English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround sound and Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0 stereo (with English subtitles). Fans of the original language option will be thrilled to have the original audio in lossless sound quality – preserving the detail in the series. The soundstage is impressive (with good sound quality). The English dub track has the upper hand in certain respects with a surround sound mix (if one wants a slightly more enveloping soundstage). Both options will please fans.
