Kandagawa Jet Girls is an action-packed sports anime involving jet-skis and bosom-girls. The animation is produced by TNK (Blade Dance of the Elementalers, Destiny of the Shrine Maiden). The series is based on the original concept by Kenichirō Takaki. Produced by Chiaki Tanimoto (Diary of Our Days at the Breakwater, Selection Project), Noritomo Isogai (Aria the Scarlet Ammo AA, Akiba's Trip: The Animation), Satoshi Motonaga (Dropout Idol Fruit Tart, The Helpful Fox Senko-san), Shigeto Takeyama (One Punch Man, Redo of Healer), and Shogo Kosakai (Senran Kagura Shinovi Master), Kandagawa Jet Girls is a fan-service production with plenty of eye-catching visuals for fans of the popular anime genre.

Rin Namiki (Yū Sasahara) is determined to follow in her late mother’s foot-steps as one of the best athletes participating within the Kandagawa Jet Girls. Exploring the fun world of jet-ski racing with the aim of duking it out against other girls (while getting their clothes to come off after rapid-fire water-gun shots are fired), Rin is tasked with more unexpectedly sexy adventures on her water-jet journeys to the top spot. Joined by newcomer Misa Aoi (Riko Kohara), who has long daydreamed of success in the sport, the two girls form an unlikely bond. Can Rin and Misa take down the other team and emerge victorious as the leaders of the Kandagawa Jet Girls?

One of the primary appeals of the series is the fanservice element. Anime fans who love the genre will be pleased with the offering. The series has plenty of close-up shots of the girls while getting wet from the jet-ski races. The extreme close-ups of their wet clothes and completely soaked bodies certainly is something fan-service junkies will be pleased with. In fact, it is clearly the main point of the production, to showcase the girls in sexy poses while engaging in the jet-ski races. As the girls go up against each other, there are plenty of fan-service moments to keep said fans satisfied.

The character designs by Tsutomu Miyazawa (Samurai Girls, Soul Buster) are well done and are perfectly suited for a fan-service anime. The designs showcase the beautiful jet-ski girls while engaging in their sport. Miyazawa certainly understands the target audience for the production and aimed to make a “splash” (so to speak) with these character designs.

The animation is impressive and the colorful art style makes the series more notable as a production. The art direction by Norifumi Nakamura (Asteroid in Love, Battle Spirits Burning Soul) provides solid background animation. The designs on the jet- skis provides an example of how the animators brought some effective components to the production. Sports fans with an interest in jet skis will appreciate the art direction for highlighting these components.

The score composed by Noisycroak (Senran Kagura Shinovi Master) doesn’t make much of an impression and mostly serves as adequate background music. The score is perfectly fine for this type of series and is something that works in the backdrop. Nonetheless, the score doesn’t stand out as something as unique or distinct.

The cinematography by Akane Fushihara (Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card, One Punch Man) and Takuya Ogata (A Place Further Than the Universe, Alderamin on the Sky) is one of the highlights. The series is certainly well lit and the bright visuals enhance the tone of the sports anime. The animation shines through with lush visuals.

Written by Go Zappa (Battle Girl High School, How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom), Kandagawa Jet Girls isn’t the most complex anime series around. The focus of the production is on the sport and the fanservice components. Zappa highlights these elements for fans of the genre but the story isn’t as ambitious as some series provide. Zappa stays in the sports anime arena but still gives the main characters some moments to shine.

Directed by Hiraku Kaneko (Tsuredure Children, The Qwaser of Stigmata), Kandagawa Jet Girls makes sure to highlight the races and keep the focus on the jet-skis. Haneko balances the sport element with the fan-service elements. The series aims to entertain with high-octane action-packed fun and this is the arena in which Kaneko excels. Fans of the genre will find the series worthwhile.

Arriving on Blu-ray from Sentai Filmworks, Kandagawa Jet Girls is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high definition in the original television broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The presentation is bright and colorful. The animation looks crisp on the release. The art style shows engaging elements from the team of animators. The encode does a solid job with the action. A presentation that capably handles the sports-anime roots. A solid effort from Sentai.

The release includes a selection of lossless audio options: English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 stereo and Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 stereo (with English subtitles). The lossless audio quality on the release is excellent. Dialogue is well reproduced and is exceptionally clear. The original score is well reproduced. The stereo sound imaging is surprisingly good and fits the sports anime genre. The high-quality audio will please series fans.

The Blu-ray release features an impressive video and audio presentation. The release also includes a noteworthy supplemental package. The set includes both a OVA episode and a "highlight reel" episode. The set also includes clean closing and opening animation alongside original Japanese promotional videos. Fans of Kandagawa Jet Girls will want to own the set and add it to their anime collection. Recommended.
