KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World - The Complete Season Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard July 22, 2024

KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World is a fantasy anime created by Aoi Akashiro and Sonshō Hangetsuban. KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World features animation production by Studio Palette (Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World, The World's Finest Assassin). The series features theme song performances by Rin Kurusu  (opening) and Akari Kitō (ending). The series was originally broadcast in Japan on Tokyo MX, BS NTV, Kansai TV, Saga TV, and AT-X. The series originally aired between April 6th, 2023 and July 6th, 2023. The series features voice- performances by Junya Enoki and Akari Kitō.

Yukito Urabe (Junya Enoki) is no ordinary leader – he’s someone with a swarm of cult followers. Yukito inherited the role of cult leader to a mass of odd fellows and obsessives. Instead of being a standard procedure leader, Yukito leads his followers within a cult he never expected to lead.

Now living in a world without religion and with no gods, Yukito must count on some unexpected surprises to happen along the way. Yukito might need more followers. Yukito seeks help by asking Mitama (Akari Kitō). Mitama was Yukito’s God in another life.

Mitama has a massive count of followers. Can Yukito somehow manage to find the additional followers he so desperately needs with the help of Mitama? Without a large enough cult of obsessives, things won’t go down smoothly. The country depends on it and Yukito must try and save the day – one obsessive at a time.

KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World features an interesting concept. The series concept is one that is certainly a good idea for the production. After all, cults are something that many people belong too. There is opportunity for comedy and drama with a cult. In the age of social media, the reality that is even more people have “followers” than ever before. So many people follow and only so many lead the way. It’s an interesting aspect of series concept. The idea of “followers” and what that means.

KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World features character designs by Kaori Yoshikawa (Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World). The character designs certainly help to add something to the anime series. The designs fit the main characters and the animators have fun with the design aesthetic as these characters look compelling for the production.

The series features noteworthy animation and production values. The series features art direction by Kōki Nagayoshi (Fantastic Detective Labyrinth, Phantom in the Twilight). The chief animation direction by Kaori Yoshikawa (Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World, The World's Finest Assassin) also makes a splash. The series animation is one of the most integral parts of the production.

The series animation makes a difference and certainly is one of the aspects that helps the production to excel on the whole. This is important especially with fantasy anime series. To work well as a fantasy the animation needs to be solid. The animators certainly did a solid job with the aesthetic of the series and achieving a specific look.

The cinematography by Ayako Otsuki (Quality Assurance in Another World, Wistoria: Wand and Sword) is a highlight of the production, too. The cinematography showcases the bright and colorful aesthetic. The cinematographer used light well to emphasize the animation and the colors the animators were wanting to explore on the series.

The score composed by Yasunori Iwasaki (The Brave Fighter of Legend Da-Garn, A Certain Magical Index: The Miracle of Endymion) provides ample background music for the series. Fans of composer Iwasaki certainly will appreciate the background music added to the anime. The music was a necessary ingredient for exploring the fantasy world.

Written by Aoi Akashiro (Classroom of the Elite, KonoSuba – God’s blessing on this wonderful world!! ), KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World is a series aimed at fantasy fans. Akashiro did solid writing on other anime series such as Classroom of the Elite and others and here the screenwriter utilizes these skills to explore a fantasy world of cults and followers. The writer has a fun concept to explore and this is something essential to the production – telling a tale of obsessives and the role of leaders and followers.

Directed by Yuki Inaba (Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World, Shōnen Ashibe GO! GO! Goma-chan), KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World isn’t going to appeal to everyone but for audiences who want a fantasy anime with a focus on cults and the like it has an intriguing concept. Director Inaba did a solid job with bringing together a good production team for the series with a compelling assembly of animators and collaborators. KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World may be worth a look for those interested.

KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World - The Complete Season Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

Released on Blu-ray by Crunchyroll, KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high- definition in the original television broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The release provides a native high-definition presentation of the series animation. This is something that is a nice feature of the box-set. Some anime Blu-ray releases are upscales of standard definition material. It is nice to see that Crunchyroll has provided a true native high-definition video presentation for the release. The result is a series with bolder looking animation, crisper details, and a vibrant aesthetic. The colors are perhaps the most notable thing.

The Blu-ray release provides an advantage over streaming video services. Streaming video services tend to provide video encoding with lower video bit-rates. For home theater enthusiasts and videophiles seeking the best possible picture quality, the video provides higher bit-rates and less compression. Enthusiasts will especially appreciate these differences. Sometimes streaming video can also be inconsistent with data bit-rates fluctuating based upon the quality of the internet connection – sometimes even due to other resources on the internet being used by family members (such as family members streaming video games or their favorite TikTok videos).

KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World - The Complete Season Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.0 of 5

The release includes a selection of lossless audio options: the main audio selections on the release are provided in English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround sound and Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0 (with English subtitles). The release also provides additional audio options: French Dolby TrueHD 2.0 and German Dolby TrueHD 2.0. English dub fans will appreciate that the English language version has a somewhat more expansive surround sound soundstage. By expanding the soundstage with 5.1 surround sound, the audio track can provide more immersion for the sound effects and score. The Japanese language version is only in 2.0 stereo but purists will still prefer to opt for it for the most authentic experience. English subtitles are provided. Either sound mix preserves the sound direction by sound direction by Keiichi Nozaki (Morita-san wa Mukuchi, Onegai Patron- sama!). It is nice to also see Crunchyroll expand selections for other foreign languages. The addition of both the French and German audio selections provides more viewing options for German and French speakers. Optional subtitle options are provided in French and German as well.

KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World - The Complete Season Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  0.5 of 5

The release comes with a nicely designed o-card slipcover. The slipcover adds some extra collectability to the packaging. Slipcover fans will especially appreciate this aspect of the release. The slipcover has additional key artwork that is different from the artwork highlighted underneath the slipcover. As a result, collectors get two different visuals – two different pieces of key art. This makes the packaging more enjoyable for collectors. The slipcover adds to the collectability of the release and looks great in hand on the shelf.

On disc supplements include:

Episode Previews (HD, 14:51)

Promo Videos (HD, 2:40)

Textless Opening Songs (HD, 10:44)

Textless Closing Songs (HD, 12:15)

Unfortunately, the release doesn't have a more robust supplemental package. This is unfortunate as bonus features can add a lot of extra value for collectors and enthusiasts. The release could have been more well-rounded with audio commentaries, making-of documentaries, behind-the- scenes featurettes, cast/crew interviews, roundtable discussions, comic con panel discussions, photo galleries, and more. Alas, these types of extras are not provided on the release. The set could have been so much better regarding the bonus features selection. Bonus features can add a tremendous amount of extra value when supplements are added to round-out a release and it can mean the difference sometimes between a purchase and a pass.

KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World - The Complete Season Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.0 of 5

KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World is a well-produced anime series. The series has nice animation and solid collaborators. For anime fans seeking a fantasy series about cults, KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World delivers something of note.

The Blu-ray release provides a native high-definition presentation and lossless audio encoding. The release is not a standard definition upscale. The release also provides a nicely designed o-card slipcover available on the first print run. The only drawback is a lackluster supplemental package. Nonetheless, series fans may wish to consider a purchase.
