Jurassic World Trilogy Blu-ray Movie Review

Based on books, ideas, and characters created by author Michael Crichton, and collecting the three 'Jurassic World' films which starred Chris Pratt ('Guardians of the Galaxy') and Bryce Dallas Howard (Pete's Dragon'), the 'Jurassic World Trilogy: Limited Edition SteelBook 4K' arrives on 4K UHD disc courtesy of Universal. The release is notable not only for packaging the second set of three films together in an attractive SteelBook, but also for updating the first film in this trilogy, 'Jurassic World', with Dolby Vision and a Dolby Atmos audio track. All of the on-disc legacy features are brought forward here, giving fans a great deal of content to sift through once they are done viewing the films. A Digital Code redeemable via Movies Anywhere is also included. Blu-ray discs are not included with this release. Bringing the first film up to date, Jurassic World 4K has been given a Dolby Vision grade that looks astonishingly good in motion. Detail levels are razor sharp, and every shot offers something to impress and explore. Fine lines, stubble, and make-up particulars on the actors' faces are always on display. Skin tones are universally healthy and natural across the board. Costuming elements yield great tactile realism, with the texture and structure of virtually every fabric being observable. The same holds true for environmental elements. Every pebble is visible as children "unearth" dinosaur bones at one attraction, each leaf and scrap of mulch is well defined on the floor of the Velociraptors' enclosure, and the wide shots as the helicopter flies over the island feature precisely defined foliage, buildings, and rock formations. Blacks are deep and inky, and depth is very pleasing. Whites are brilliant. Fine film grain is present and resolves naturally and without issue. I spent a fair amount of time during one of my viewings of the film trying to find exceptions to this, but was unable to do so. It's a wonderful transfer.

The Dolby Atmos track on Jurassic World is consistently immersive. As is sometimes the case with Universal's Atmos tracks, the track sounds a bit quiet at my standard viewing volume, but turning the volume up a few clicks brings it to the right level and allows for the track to be fully appreciated. The persistent immersion is sometimes handled subtly, such as in the lab, where technicians chatter and equipment beeps as Bryce Dallas- Howard leads investors through its dazzling environs. There's just enough ambient sounds to suggest a workplace where everyone is deeply focused on their tasks. Once the boys arrive at Jurassic World, the track springs to more impressively robust life, with the score, roars of dinosaurs, and voices of the throngs of visitors who populate the attraction surrounding the viewer. After that initial burst, the track dials back down to allow the focus to be on the interchange between the four actors, but the atmospherics and ambient sounds never fully dissipate or vanish. Heights aid flying helicopters, dinosaurs, and debris during some of the film's more dramatic action scenes. Music is wonderfully reproduced, with the orchestral score sounding majestic and precise. Directionality is accurate, and objects move smoothly through the field. Bass is deep and booming, adding a great bottom to the score and adding massive weight to the movement of a wide variety of lumbering dinosaurs. Viewers will find a great deal to enjoy.

In a style consistent with the previous SteelBook which collects the three Jurassic Park films, (read about that release here), on the cover of the Jurassic World: Limited Edition SteelBook 4K we're once again greeted by a host of dinosaurs, including Velociraptors, a Tyrannosaurus Rex, and Pterodactyls arranged around and above the open gate to Jurassic World. The precisely detailed images of the creatures stand out well against the SteelBook's Cambridge Blue background. Below them, in the center, is the debossed Jurassic Park logo. On the reverse, we see the Innovation Center which sat at the heart of the Jurassic World campus. It is surrounded by lush vegetation. At the bottom are the logos and copyright information for both Universal and Amblin Entertainment. The spine features the title of the release, Jurassic World Trilogy, with the words "Jurassic World" appearing in their traditional font. Universal's logo is found at the bottom.

As with the previous SteelBook, when opening the SteelBook, the tabs that are normally found on the left to secure the Digital Copy are once again absent. As a result, the slip of paper containing the Digital Code floats free. On the left, a hub houses the Jurassic World 4K UHD disc. On the right side, the 4K UHD discs for Jurassic World: Dominion and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom are stagger-stacked, each on its own hub, with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's 4K UHD disc on top. Removing all of the contents reveals a collage of stills capturing a modest number of the most identifiable characters, dinosaurs, and scenes from the three films included here. The SteelBook features a matte finish which should resist fingerprints associated with normal handling. It's a well-designed SteelBook and an appropriate companion for the one containing the prior set of films.

Jurassic World Trilogy Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation 

The Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos upgrades are welcome additions to the first film of the three found here, offering fans noticeable improvements on both the audio and visual fronts. The other two films included remain unchanged, both having already had Dolby Vision color grades and holding steady with their lively DTS:X audio tracks which pack plenty of punch. While the first trilogy was likely the stronger grouping of films, there is certainly fun to be had here, and the dinosaur-related scenes still deliver the requisite thrills and eye candy. For franchise fans, the Jurassic World Trilogy: Limited Edition SteelBook 4K comes highly recommended.
