Jurassic Park Collection 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman May 27, 2018

This Best Buy exclusive SteelBook set houses all four of the currently released (at time of writing) films in the 'Jurassic Park' series. The set is good but not great. The picture quality varies quite wildly amongst the four films, though none looks egregiously bad. Audio is a little more stabilized as all four films hover near the top end of the audio spectrum. Perhaps most disappointing, no new bonuses are included; this would have seemed a great time to cobble together a new disc's worth of content and maybe toss in a teaser or two for the upcoming 'Fallen Kingdom.' As it is, the set is fine, but it's a relatively low effort release, all things considered.

Jurassic Park Collection 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.0 of 5

Best Buy's always desirable SteelBook exclusives have another gorgeous, though slightly flawed, add to the collection. The eight-disc, two-SteelBook set comes housed in a sturdy slip box that even has small demarcation tabs along the top and bottom to ensure that the valued prizes don't rub against one another in the box. However, the box does ship (at least mine did) with a good dollop of glue on the top to hold on the back cover sheet and it's rather stubborn in its adhesive properties and seems like it would take part of the artwork with it if one were to remove it. The box is otherwise dense and feels solid in the hand. The front artwork is taken from an iconic moment from near the end of Jurassic Park while the rear side offers a sepia-toned panel showing dinosaur fossils in the museum. The box does feature embossed (raised) lettering on the top, spine, and the logo on the front. It's very much similar -- identical, practically, beyond width -- to the companion DigiBook release which is smaller to accommodate the comparatively more petite book.

The SteelBooks are very attractive. Both sport a glossy-black finish which is prone to significant fingerprinting (see screenshot eight). There is no embossing or debossing on the SteelBooks themselves. Both house four discs, "blue" containing the Blu-ray discs and "red" the UHD discs. Discs are not stacked or staggered-stacked but rather secured in their own transparent tabs, one on each side of the SteelBook and two on the front and back of a flap in the middle. "Blue" opens to a two-panel spread of a shot from Jurassic World while "red" features a two-panel spread of a shot from Jurassic Park, but it's really too dark to appreciate. Buyer beware of flaws in the set. While my "blue" SteelBook is fine, "red" arrived with severely dinged corners (even though the box was in perfect condition, see screenshot 11) and the case will not secure shut. The bottom of the box also appears to have suffered damage from a spider-type security tag even though it shipped prior to release date from Best Buy's warehouse.

A Movies Anywhere digital copy code is included with purchase.

Jurassic Park Collection 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

This two-SteelBook set is sleek and attractive, prone to fingerprinting and (possibly) point-of-shipment damage, but they make for very handsome and tastefully reserved additions to any SteelBook library. The films range from enjoyable to classic, the UHD transfers range from fair to fantastic, the audio is uniformly strong, and the extras are plentiful, albeit legacy. Recommended, though it would be nice if Universal gave at least the first film in the series the TLC it deserves.
