Jungle Cruise 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Randy Miller III November 22, 2021

Now available alongside the standard 4K and Blu-ray editions, Disney and Target have collaborated on a 4K variant of the 2021 film Jungle Cruise. Like many of its recent Disney exclusives, however, it amounts to little more than a deluxe slipcover with two bonus prints. An elusive Best Buy Steelbook is also available for collectors of that format.

For a film synopsis and critique of Jungle Cruise, please see Martin Liebman's review of the standard 4K disc.

Jungle Cruise 4K Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

For thoughts on Jungle Cruise's 4K transfer, please see Martin Liebman's review of the standard 4K disc. Please note that this Target exclusive edition, like the Best Buy Steelbook, also includes a Blu-ray copy of the film.

Jungle Cruise 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.5 of 5

This two-disc release ships in a standard keepcase that's identical to the standard 4K edition, which includes a Digital Copy redemption slip and the same assortment of extras found on the included Blu-ray copy. Again, the only actual difference here is the slipcover itself, which takes its template cues from previous exclusives like Free Guy.

  • Exclusive Packaging - The exclusive slipcover features alternate cover art that folds out to reveal two illustrated images of Dr. Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt) and Frank Wolff (Dwayne Johnson) in full explorer mode, while the back cover features the arrowhead artifact central to the film's plot. Tucked inside the slipcover sleeve on the left side are two foil-enhanced mini prints featuring the cover art and a second collage image that looks even more striking in direct comparison. The prints are very attractive with a nice metallic sheen; those familiar with comic books will find them similar in appearance and feel to those "chromium covers" which were all the rage in the 1990s and early 2000s. Also included is a cardboard "easel" to display one of them, but it's a cheap design that's not very well thought out or functional. The prints are cool; otherwise, the slipcover's blend of art deco elements and old-school illustrations never quite gels -- I think it would've made a lot more sense if the other bonus image (above left) was used as the front cover of a textured Digibook.

Jungle Cruise 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

Disney's Jungle Cruise is a fun but fairly frivolous film that nonetheless should appeal to fans of the cast. The 4K presentation is fine but slightly lackluster considering its native 4K source material, and the Dolby Atmos mix is also very good while falling a little short of true greatness. Likewise, Target's exclusive 4K edition doesn't impress other than the two foil-enhanced prints tucked inside (one of which looks more appealing than the approved cover art), which makes this something of an underwhelming package overall. For die-hard collectors and fans only.
