Jumanji 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman January 21, 2020

Sony and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive SteelBook release for 1995's fantasy board game film 'Jumanji.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Jumanji 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.5 of 5

Jumanji's UHD SteelBook is, inside and out, essentially the game scaled down. The front and rear cover, made of a slick and smooth fingerprint attracting material, replicates the wooden box that iconically holds the game. The rear panel is entirely the wood product with no text of any kind. The front continues the illusion but centered is a rather large image featuring characters and animals encircled on all four corners and an exotic vista center. The game's title, with a spear running through it right to left, is center. There is some impressive emboss/deboss work at play here as well. The spine carries the wooden look as well with the game (movie) title center. A Sony Pictures logo does appear at the bottom, but there are even depictions of hinges on the spine to totally sell the boxy illusion.

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features an involved arrangement of text on the left hand panel advertising the game's qualities and explaining its instructions. On the right is the Jumanji board game. Nifty! Too bad this SteelBook didn't come with pieces and dice.

Jumanji 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Jumanji looks and sounds great on UHD and this SteelBook is the best way to own the film, hands down. It's a beautiful presentation, but one wonders if Sony would ever consider scaling it up and selling the full game with this and other current and future Jumanji movies inside. That would be a terrific special edition. Until then, this one earns my highest recommendation.
