Joker 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman January 16, 2020

Warner Brothers and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive SteelBook release for the Oscar nominated origins story picture 'Joker.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Joker 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.0 of 5

This smooth, slick SteelBook depicts Arthur Fleck on the front cover, large and prominent, applying his Joker makeup against a harshly bright background. The colorful makeup and clothes illicit a light, easy feel, obviously in contrast to the movie's dark tone. The film's title is prominently displayed in faded, scuffed, tall letters on the right hand side, not all the way to the bottom but still below the midline. A DC logo appears below and lead actor names Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro are situated above in yellow. The rear panel depicts Fleck's Joker dancing down a steep gray outdoor staircase, colorfully dressed in familiar attire and in full makeup. A rather large billing block appears in the bottom third of the space rather than on the interior panel where Warner Brothers usually places it. The spine features the film's title in the same block letters as the front, but here they are vertically rather than horizontally oriented. DC and Warner Brothers logos appear on the bottom, all against black.

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that depicts Arthur Fleck carefully applying his makeup, in essence a continuation of, or variant on, the front cover artwork. The face fills the left hand side; the right houses the hand and makeup application device in front of a black background.

Joker 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

This is a terrific SteelBook that accentuates the title character on all three surfaces: front, rear, and interior. A little more variation beyond makeup application for the interior panel, already covered on the front, might have been welcome, but most fans should find this to be a terrific collection addition for both the packaging and the on-disc content. Very highly recommended.
