Jaws 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman June 13, 2020

Universal and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive UHD SteelBook release for Director Steven Spielberg's 1975 blockbuster 'Jaws.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release, but it does not include the glossy color booklet that ships with that edition. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Jaws 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.0 of 5

The Jaws SteelBook is all about classic design cues and choices. The SteelBook proper is nicely textured. It won't slip around in the hand, it's not smooth and glossy, and it won't show fingerprints. If only all of them felt this way. Much of the exterior takes on an aquatic blue coloring. On the front is the classic image of the shark facing upward, its nose forming the letter "A" in the word "Jaws" which runs across the front, slightly above the midline, in a lighter watery color with some bubbles in each letter, concentrated in the "S.". The shark is off to the left, bearing its teeth, ready to chomp a swimmer, who appears on the rear panel just as in the familiar poster artwork, up on the surface with water filling the bottom three-quarters of space. A bright white sky appears above her. There's a mild reflectiveness to the watery components front and rear. On the back, a studio logo and some legalese appears in fine print bottom left. A model number has been placed in tiny text bottom right. The spine maintains the blue watery color. The film's title in lighter watery tones appears in small type center. A Universal logo may be seen at the bottom.

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features a scene of panic: swimmers are stampeding out of the water, running towards shore from the shark making a mess of things somewhere back in the distance.

Jaws 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Nice SteelBook. It feels good, it looks good, it gets down to basics inside and out. The UHD content is absolutely first-rate and it goes without saying that the movie is a certified classic. This SteelBook earns my highest recommendation.
