Jailhouse Wardress Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman January 14, 2024

Jailhouse Wardress may or may not live up to the description on the back cover of this release which states it's "one of the most notorious 'women in prison' epics", but one way or the other, Jailhouse Wardress simply can't live up (if that's the right terminology) to the statement which follows that pronouncement, namely that this is a "Jess Franco production", despite the fact that Franco gets at least a co-directing credit for this bizarre mash up of previously produced films. In the unintentional hilarity department, various nooks and crannies of the internet actually list a variety of different films that supposedly comprise this offering, though the consensus is that the bulk of the material here comes from Elsa Fraulein SS (listed in our database as Captive Women 4), Hitler's Last Train (AKA Last Train for Hitler) and an actual Jess Franco offering, Barbed Wire Dolls. The result is like the cinematic equivalent of a casserole made from a variety of unappealing ingredients, and it has what might be called the cinematic equivalent of glop as a result. Even diehard fans of Franco may find this one a bit hard to enjoy.

Is there a plot here? Ostensibly, though considering the fact that this "production" is more like a cut and paste enterprise, it hardly matters, as the main "ingredients" are doses of sadistic women in prison elements combined with Nazi-sploitation. The "titillation" is definitely on the smarmy side, and even some of the supposedly sadistic aspects are almost hilariously mundane. This particular imprint of MVD Visual, MVD Classics, really hasn't put out a ton of material, at least that has crossed my review queue, but one way or the other, I doubt even lovers of what is often called Eurotrash would consider this in any way, shape or form a "classic", even in the "so bad it's good" category.

Jailhouse Wardress Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  1.5 of 5

Jailhouse Wardress is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of MVD Classics, an imprint of MVD Visual, with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.42:1. Probably unsurprisingly, MVD doesn't provide any technical information or provenance of whatever element was utilized, but this is obviously culled from an older source that has a number of problems, including its aspect ratio (the IMDb lists an original aspect ratio of 1.66:1). That is actually a lesser issue, however, as this transfer has widely variant color timing, sometimes within individual shots, so that the palette can almost visibly segue from cyan to magenta to yellow and then back again. At times, things actually approach relatively "natural" appearances with regard to flesh tones, but these moments are transitory and even then aren't completely convincing. There are a number of noticeable problems in some darker sections of some frames where quasi-chroma anomalies and/or near pixellation can appear (see the right side of screenshot 2 or the right side of screenshot 6). There appears to have been some kind of filtering applied, as grain is never very apparent. Damage is also recurrent and ranges from blemishes, nicks and scratches to some instability.

Jailhouse Wardress Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  2.5 of 5

Jailhouse Wardress offers either French or English language options delivered via LPCM 2.0 Mono tracks. Both of these show considerable damage which may not actually debilitate dialogue (which may or may not be a good thing), but which show rampant background crackle and hiss. The English language track may have just a tad bit more high end, though that probably only makes the hiss all the more apparent. The incredibly shoddy dubbing in both languages means that lip movements are almost hilariously at odds with the words emanating from them. Optional English subtitles are available.

Jailhouse Wardress Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  1.0 of 5

I'm admittedly not a huge fan of Franco, though I just as admittedly kind of get a kick out of some of his films. This really isn't a "true" Jess Franco film, though, despite having co-opted scenes from one of his productions, and so it's probably unfair to lump it in with some of his other work. Maybe there's an audience out there for this kind of swill, but even those "fans" had better be prepared for a pretty lackluster technical presentation and only one quasi-supplement tied to the actual film.
