It Follows 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman August 15, 2025

While Lionsgate Limited is revisiting two older previous 1080 releases with 4K upgrades for this month's offerings, this release (originally offered by Starz / Anchor Bay on 1080 disc in Region A, though see below for other international releases) does not include a 1080 disc, as is the case with High Tension 4K.

It Follows features one of the more deliberately provocative conceits of a supernaturally tinged horror feature, and that decidedly unusual underpinning for the film gives it an immediately visceral quality that is both disturbing and unsettling. The film may not overtly address historical events like the AIDS crisis which might be described as creating "sexually transmitted death", but the fact that "sexually transmitted death" is indeed the core of this tale, albeit again in a supernatural setting, probably gives It Follows enough, um, juice to help it elide a few minor stumbles along the way.

As mentioned above, It Follows had a 1080 release courtesy of Starz / Anchor Bay back in 2015*, and Martin Liebman's It Follows Blu-ray review provides a plot summary, list of supplements on the 1080 disc, and Marty's reaction to the technical presentation. Region B also had a 1080 release in 2015 that was reviewed by Stephen Larson in 2020 (the link will get you to Stephen's review). More saliently, however, especially in light of several "new" supplements (at least on this side of the pond) on this disc from Second Sight, Randy Miller III's It Follows 4K Blu-ray review of the UK Second Sight 4K UHD disc should be of interest to readers as well. It's probably worth noting that the Second Sight release also included a (Region B) 1080 disc. I'm a bit more in line with Randy's overall score for the film than either Marty or Stephen, in just the latest example of my recurrent mantra "different reviewers means different opinions."

*Kind of interestingly for such a lesser remembered film, in Region A It Follows also received a (1080) SteelBook edition about a year after its first 1080 release, and another 1080 Wal-mart Exclusive with a branded slipcover.

Note: This release does not include a 1080 Blu-ray, so these screenshots are taken directly from the 4K UHD disc and downscaled to 1080 and SDR. Color space in particular is therefore not accurate, and I recommend those interested to look at some of the screenshots in Randy's It Follows 4K Blu-ray review and his It Follows Blu-ray review (of Second Sight's 1080 release in Region B) for a better representation of the palette. Since this release does not include a 1080 disc, the 2K video score above has been intentionally left blank.

It Follows is presented in 4K UHD courtesy of Lionsgate Films' Lionsgate Limited imprint / etailer with an HEVC / H.265 encoded 2160p transfer in 2.39:1. Lionsgate Limited really hasn't been providing much technical information on their transfers, and that's once again the case here, though Randy's review cites the fact that this is "sourced from a brand new 4K master built from It Follows' digital source elements; this process was apparently produced in conjunction with the original post-production facility and the end result approved by director David Robert Mitchell". While I don't have a 1080 presentation to compare this to, as Randy also cites in his review, this is a really sterling 4K presentation that offers considerably impressive fine detail at times, along with a really sumptuously nuanced palette courtesy of the HDR / Dolby Vision grades. I was especially struck in the fine detail department with "little" but salient items like the incredibly precise rendering of the fine screen on part of a kind of sunroom / greenhouse seen early in the story, to cite just one example. In terms of palette, I was especially struck by some of the almost orange sepia tones (notable in a car scene) and some of the really evocate cooler tones in the blue to teal to green ranges.

It Follows 4K Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  5.0 of 5

It Follows feature a really enjoyable Dolby Atmos mix which (no pun intended) sounds much as Randy describes in his review (I'll add more in a bit), but if there's one downside for audiophiles on this release, it's that the original 5.1 mix is offered only in lossy Dolby Digital (the Second Sight release had DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1). The Atmos mix announces its verticality from the get go with some kind of haunting wind / whooshing effects, and there are isolated moments of overhead activity further on, but as Randy mentions in his review, the Atmos mix is perhaps better enjoyed as a rather nuanced reimagining of the original surround track rather than a totally "showy" Atmos track. Ambient environmental effects are really evocative throughout, and add palpably to senses of dread at various times, something that I found especially commendable given the nice lack of traditional startle effects. Dialogue is rendered cleanly and clearly throughout. Optional English and Spanish subtitles are available.

The SteelBook offers a cool blue image of Jay on the front panel, and a kind of intriguing image on the back panel that offers a spooky "from behind" perspective that is sideways (so that turning the SteelBook 45 degrees offers a "widescreen" image that is "right side up"). The rear panel continues the blue color scheme, though with some deep purples added. The interior panels offer a disturbing frame from the film that is a more explicit version of screenshot 5 that I've uploaded to accompany this review. A Mylar O ring adds some ghostly hands around Jay's face on the front, and offers production credits on the back. Packaging images have already been uploaded, accessible under the appropriate tab above. A digital copy is also included.

It Follows 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

It Follows has built a considerable fan base over the years, and those in Region A should be generally well pleased with this great looking and sounding release. The only potential downsides here for some will probably be the lossy audio for the original 5.1 mix and no inclusion of a 1080 disc. Otherwise, It Follows comes Recommended.
