Ip Man 2 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman December 10, 2020

Note: This film is available as part of Ip Man: The Complete Collection 4K.

As has been repeatedly documented by a number of reviewers at Blu-ray.com including yours truly, the story of Ip Man seems to be the gift that keeps on giving, cinematically speaking, with an almost insane number of films either overtly or in some cases ostensibly dealing with the famous martial arts master (some of which I've at least tried to list in some previous reviews). Well Go USA is now continuing this apparently "unending story" with new 4K versions of the first three Ip Man films, bundled in this new edition with the previously released 4K UHD version of the fourth film. All four 4K UHD presentations also offer Dolby Atmos audio. As of the writing of this review, it does not look like Well Go USA is offering standalone 4K UHD releases (with or without 1080 versions also included) of the first three films.

For those wanting a plot recap, please refer to my Ip Man 2 Blu-ray review of the Collector's Edition of the 1080 version.

Note: Screenshots are sourced from the 1080 Blu-ray.

Ip Man 2: Legend of the Grandmaster is presented in 4K UHD courtesy of Well Go USA with a 2160p transfer in 2.35:1. While this occasionally has something approaching the noisy look I mentioned in the Ip Man 4K Blu-ray review, it's nowhere near so severe and is considerably more intermittent, tending to crop up in some of the desaturated, quasi black and white material and later in some of the boxing sequences. Otherwise, though, grain resolves very nicely, giving this a commendably organic look. This second Ip Man outing is considerably more colorful than the first film, and that helps elevate the Dolby Vision aspect quite a bit. There are a number of standout moments, from some of the almost sepia toned shots to the really gorgeous greens and blue-greens on Ip Man's rooftop. Other really vivid pops of color include the yellow and orange sheets hanging on a clothesline and especially the greens and yellows in the whole climax sequence. Occasionally flesh tones tip slightly toward orange territory.

Ip Man 2 4K Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.0 of 5

Ip Man 2: Legend of the Grandmaster features a Dolby Atmos track in Cantonese, along with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 tracks in a variety of languages (see our specs, above). Much as with the first film, the Atmos rendering only intermittently engages vertical effects. Many of these are most noticeable in some of the outdoor material, as in the rooftop sequences, where ambient effects like the chirping of birds can waft overhead. Score occasionally also assumes more of a vertical presence, and some of the action sequences occasionally provide that element as well. The "traditional" surround channels are as well utilized as they are in the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mixes, especially in (again) some of the outdoor material. Dialogue is rendered cleanly and clearly, though as with many of the films in this set, it's clear some of the actors have been dubbed. Optional subtitles in English and Spanish are available.

Ip Man 2 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  n/a of 5

The 4K UHD disc in this set does not offer any supplements and the score above reflects that deficit. The bundled 1080 disc repeats the supplements from the Blu-ray disc detailed in my above linked review of the Collector's Edition in 1080.

Ip Man 2 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

Ip Man 2: Legend of the Grandmaster is more formula driven than the first Ip Man was, but that actually may make this film more appealing to many people, as its phenomenal box office seems to have proven. This 4K UHD presentation is significantly more pleasing than the first film's 4K UHD video is, and if the Atmos track isn't a complete mind (and/or ear) blower, it provides the same excellent traditional surround activity that the 1080 release's DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track did. Recommended.
