There’s an odd tonality to 1982’s “Intimate Lessons.” Director Phillip Marshak strives to make something of a comedy concerning a weekend sex education seminar, playing up the broadness of the instructor and his bizarre lessons. And there’s a semi-darker side to the endeavor, which details games of manipulation and seduction among the guests and their hosts. It’s certainly a bit different than the normal offering of adult entertainment, finding Marshak playing with the atmosphere of the movie, which results in an interesting collision of the psychological and the physical.

Various strangers have arrived at “Castle Copula” for a weekend of exploration, with Sir Aubrey (Paul Thomas) and his assistant, Lady Amanda (Kay Parker), preparing two days of lectures and demonstrations concerning the ways of sexual experiences. It’s a time filled with speeches and introductions, with Dianna (Danielle) and Jerry (Jeff Conrad) hitting it off as roommates, quickly embarking on an affair. And there’s Victoria (K.C. Valentine), a virgin ready to enjoy her first sexual experience. The seminar has its schedule, but desires often overwhelm the guests, who sample the hosts and enjoy themselves. However, Jerry is unhappy, and Sir Aubrey isn’t going to allow anyone to just walk away from his celebration.

“Castle Copula” seems like an average suburban home in California, but for “Intimate Lessons,” it’s an estate owned by Sir Aubrey, who’s dedicated his life to the education of others. He’s a lover of sex and its place in history and the arts, ready to deliver a seminar to the gathered guests they won’t forget. There’s Boris (Richard Bulk), an Igor-like butler, and The Chauffeur (William Margold) is quick to help with demonstrations, but most of the heavy lifting is done by Sir Aubrey and Lady Amanda, who seek to bring pleasure to the people.

“Intimate Lessons” is episodic, going through the various lessons of the two-day experience. This includes poetry readings, self-pleasure tips and toy practice, and a history lesson on the Isle of Lesbos. The saga of Jerry and Dianna is as close to a plot as the movie gets, with the sudden couple quickly at odds when Sir Aubrey’s sexual glow proves to be too much of a temptation for the young woman. Issues of jealousy are raised, attempting to give “Intimate Lessons” a little dramatic weight, and there’s Lady Amanda’s tricks to keep Jerry in line, but the film is primarily about the lure of the topics. The characters get warmed up and set loose, adding some agreeable variation to couplings, including some time at the pool, taking carnal desires underwater.

The AVC encoded image (1.85:1 aspect ratio) presentation is listed as "newly scanned and restored in 4K from its 35mm original camera negative." The viewing experience delivers decent detail, examining various skin particulars and fine hairs during erotic events. Clothing also plays a part in the endeavor, with the characters dressed up in styles of the day and costumes for "lesson" time, and sheerness is preserved. Interiors around the "castle" retain a good view of decorative additions. A few exteriors maintain depth. Color is lively, especially with period outfits, which deliver bright primaries. Wood paneled interiors are also distinct. Skin tones are natural. Delineation is satisfactory. Grain is heavy and film-like. Source is in good condition.

The 2.0 DTS-HD MA mix handles dialogue exchanges with clarity, managing the varied performance capabilities of the cast. Scoring supports with decent instrumentation, carrying a funkier sound at times. Soundtrack addition maintains distinct vocals.

"Intimate Lessons" is playful and a little sinister, yet Marshak doesn't get ugly with the endeavor. He does get a little gross, staging an orgy during a dinner buffet, but the film mostly remains lively and broadly acted, occasionally resembling a theater camp project. Marshak delivers with bedroom activity and uniqueness, creating some erotic highlights along the way, with periodic dips into strangeness to keep viewers wondering where all of this is headed.
