Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it's no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness. The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley's mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley's main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

"How do you feel?" was the one question that stumped a recently revived half human, half emotionless Vulcan Spock in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. It's no wonder the question confused him, but confusion is also more than a valid response, and a common response at that, for humans, too, humans who deal with the complex interactions of life and the resultant emotions that are, if one is lucky, straightforward and readily identifiable but that are instead, more often than not, knotty tangles that can leave an individual overwhelmed. And leave it to Disney and Pixar to take a shot at, and succeed in, sorting them out. Inside Out is the brilliant digitally animated movie that peeks inside one little girl's head for a look at how life can influence any, and often all, of five core emotions: joy, sadness, anger, fear, and disgust. The movie is a wonderful example of how the cinema medium, when it's at its best and crafted at the hands of master storytellers, can take a complicated idea and make it satisfyingly accessible, colorful, and fun for the kids while retaining all of the complex, interlocking, deeply personal, and endlessly insightful ideas on and realities of what it means to live and all of the complications that come with life.
Turning her world blue.
Inside Out's 3D transfer is fantastic. The presentation adds a tremendous level of depth to practically every scene, with special notice given to
the expansive "mind" exterior that seems to stretch on, and far backwards, into the screen to yield a positive sense of wide-open space. More intimate
settings also benefit, of course, both in Riley's mind and in the real world. General spacing is a strength, and volume is obvious, both on the emotion
characters and in the little details around their command center, like the memory balls and even the little knobs and buttons on the control panel, both
which appear with a tangible sense of size and place. Riley's school desk shows terrific separation between the seat and the surface, and various
outdoor and indoor shots alike reveal a pleasing level of effortless depth. There are a few interesting moments that appear to extend beyond the
screen, but the transfer is mostly about creating a spacious environment back into the screen and not projecting it out. The 2D image attributes remain
largely identical to the 2D-only transfer, also included in this release. Colors remain the unequivocal
highlight. There's not a perceptible drop-off in vitality or precision in 3D. Details don't suffer, either, as the transfer still reveals every fine character
nuance and environmental tidbit with commanding ease. Inside Out makes for one of the finer 3D watches on the Blu-ray format and one that
3D-equipped audiences will find well worth the added cost.

Inside Out's DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 lossless soundtrack excels in every facet. Music is precisely defined throughout, whether light and airy piano notes or more aggressively styled music. Surround sound is constant and even, with full stage immersion and low end weight being amongst the track's signatures. The entire stage springs to life with any number and variety of sound effects, from hushed ambience to aggressive crashes. Real-world traffic din and "inside" world details, which are many and varied, are equally immersive and detailed, presenting with just the right placement, movement, bass, and definition. Dialogue delivery is rich and center focused with no issues pertaining to clarity or prioritization. This is a stellar listen from Disney.
Inside Out contains supplements on two Blu-ray discs, the feature film disc and a dedicated supplemental disc. A DVD copy of the film and
a Disney digital copy voucher are included with purchase. No unique 3D extras are included, but the Lava short film is available in 3D on
the 3D disc and, of course, in 2D on the included 2D disc.
Feature Film (2D) Disc:
Inside Out works perfectly on every level. It takes high concept and deeply philosophical ideas on human emotion and how life experiences shape one's approach to, and outlook on, life and presents and explores them smartly and captivatingly while at the same time making them charming and accessible. The animation is gorgeous and the voice acting is excellent. Disney's Blu-ray 3D release is equally terrific, presenting superb video and audio to go along with a generous allotment of extra content. Inside Out earns my highest recommendation.
