Arriving at a mansion for some late night plumbing work, Eddie (Bud Abbott) and Albert (Lou Costello) manage to make a mess of the place. Their cab driver, Elsie (Marion Hutton), is spotted by Peter (Kirby Grant), who tries to impress the young woman by welcoming her into high society. Accidentally invited to the unveiling of an expensive painting, Eddie and Albert are pressured into theft when their loan shark demands the boys steal the work of art.
The AVC encoded image (1.35:1 aspect ratio) presentation for "In Society" supplies a comfortably bright and clear viewing experience. While detail isn't exact, there are textures to enjoy, especially with the production's ornate costuming, which delivers a varied feel of fabrics. Close-ups contribute acceptable facial surfaces, and outdoor adventures are passably dimensional. Delineation is healthy, preserving frame information. Source is in decent shape, with light scratches and speckling.
The 2.0 DTS-HD MA sound mix captures the essentials of "In Society," though heavy hiss is present throughout the listening event. Musical moods are achieved with decent instrumentation and enjoyable vocals, giving performances some presence, and scoring is active. Dialogue exchanges are appreciable, with argumentative behavior managed. Softer romantic conversations are cozier.
"In Society" is entertaining, but there are no hospital corners when it comes to storytelling, which tries to support a wafer thin plot. The picture is stronger in pieces, showcasing a few lively musical numbers (including one involving bathing beauties and bouncing balls at a pool) and comedic encounters, while Abbott and Costello are tasked to play to their strengths.
