In Another World With My Smartphone is a science-fiction fantasy comedy anime series with elements of romance and adventure. The series is from creator Patora Fuyuhara. In Another World With My Smartphone features original character designs by Eiji Usatsuka.
In Another World With My Smartphone features animation production by Ashi Productions (Blue Seed, Cutie Honey Universe). The series theme music is by Takamitsu Shimazaki (opening) and buzzG (ending). Produced by Hideo Momoda (How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord, When Supernatural Battles Became Commonplace), Hiromi Sueta, Keiji Hamada (Cutie Honey Universe, Ikki Tousen: Dragon Destiny), Ryuji Kasamatsu (Bikini Warriors, If It’s for My Daughter, I’d Even Defeat a Demon Lord), Shigeto Nihei (Tantei Opera Milky Holmes, Anyamaru Tantei Kiruminzū), and Yasuyuki Iwanami, In Another World With My Smartphone features a lead voice performance by Katsumi Fukuhara.
Tōya Mochizuki (Katsumi Fukuhara) is tragically killed and his life ended far too soon. As a result of his life ending early, God decides to give Tōya a second chance at life by providing Tōya with an all-new adventurous life. Tōya discovers a new world and lives life once more in a fantastical land with great fortune and adventure left-and-right. In the new land, Tōya also finds himself surrounded by a huge swarm of cute girls. Now living a new life of magic and technology, Tōya finds things are looking up for him. Yet even with life looking up – including the bevy of cute girls all around him – he can’t help being distracted by his cell phone.
The character designs by Masahiro Sekiguchi (If It’s for My Daughter, I’d Even Defeat a Demon Lord), Miyako Nishida (The Blue Wolves of Mibu, Cutie Honey Universe), and Toshihide Masudate (In the Land of Leadale, Servant Princess) are well done. The designs are certainly compelling and add a lot of great attributes to the production. The designs might not be as original as the best anime series around but the art style and character attributes are solid and work well for the production. A good effort overall.
The animation is one of the best attributes of the In Another World With My Smartphone series. In Another World With My Smartphone features art direction by Satoshi Shibata (Cutie Honey Universe, Rainbow Days). In Another World With My Smartphone also features chief animation direction by Kaho Deguchi (Cutie Honey Universe), Miyako Nishida (The Demon Prince of Momochi House, Rainbow Days), Masahiro Sekiguchi, and Toshihide Masudate (Cutie Honey Universe, Elf Princess Rane). The animation style is compelling. An imaginative animation style and one that showcases the efforts of the animators. A vibrant and energetic aesthetic.
The cinematography by Tomokazu Shiratori (One Piece: Strong World Episode 0, Tropical-Rouge! Precure) is colorful and bold. The cinematography shines with an engaging cinematographic style. Audiences will appreciate the lush cinematography and the manner in which it helps to highlight the animation.
Written by Natsuko Takahashi (Blue Drop, Monster Hunter Stories RIDE ON), In Another World With My Smartphone is a decent anime. The series has a reasonably solid concept. While not a classic script the story has some good ideas. Takahashi has fun with the characters.
Directed by Yūji Yanase (In the Land of Leadale, By the Grace of the Gods), In Another World With My Smartphone isn’t going to blow anyone away but it is a decent anime with some reasonable fun for audiences looking for a light diversion. Fans of such anime series may find it worth checking out sometime during a rainy-day afternoon.
Released on Blu-ray by Funimation (now Crunchyroll), In Another World With My Smartphone is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high-definition in the original television broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The release sports an impressive high-definition presentation. The colorful aesthetic of the animation is well reproduced on the release. The cinematography is nicely highlighted. The animation excels. A solid encode.
The release includes a selection of lossless audio options: English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround sound and Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0 (with English subtitles). The release capably preserves the sound direction by Takumi Itō (Real Girl, Duel Masters King). The score is well reproduced and integrated into the audio presentation. The English dub is slightly more enveloping with a 5.1 surround track but purists certainly should prefer the original Japanese language option nonetheless – the lossless 2.0 stereo audio is no slouch by any means.

In Another World With My Smartphone is a decent anime series. In Another World With My Smartphone might not be the most original or riveting anime out there but it has some fun exploring the characters and the concept of the saga. The Blu-ray release provides a solid high-definition presentation and lossless audio. The release also comes with a decent supplemental package. Recommended.
