I'm Still Here Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard February 3, 2026

I’m Still Here is a critically acclaimed drama exploring a true story. Based on the book "Ainda Estou Aqui" by Marcelo Rubens Paiva. Winner of the Bet International Film Award at the 2025 Academy Award. Starring Fernanda Torres.

The setting is Brazil in 1971. The country has started to face a military dictatorship. Eunice Paiva (Fernanda Torres), mother to five children, must figure out a way to protect her children and family after the military calls away her husband Rubens (Selton Mello) for interrogation.

Eunice’s husband never returned from the interrogation. Eunice seeks justice for the disappearance of her husband over a period of decades as the story unfold and explores her own resilience and strength. Can the family find peace even despite the horrors of the past?

Fernanda Torres is incredible in the film. Torres delivers a first-rate performance. There is a sense of dedication to the role that is undeniable. The powerful performance is one of the best I have ever seen in any film and deserved every accolade. Torres gives a genuine and complex performance of a person going through an incredibly difficult situation.

Always.

The score composed by Warren Ellis (The Proposition, Hell or High Water) is remarkably engaging and haunting. The music is a beautiful backdrop to the storytelling. The music plays an integral role in the film.

The cinematography by Adrian Teijido (Sergio, Narcos) is evocative and beautiful. The cinematography is one of the finest qualities of the feature. The lush and melancholic visuals are nostalgic and haunting at the same time. The breathtaking visuals are as beautiful as any work of art displayed in a museum.

Edited by Affonso Gonçalves (Hamnet, Paterson), I’m Still Here is well paced. The editing flows well throughout the feature-film. The editing style capably showcases the filmmakers vision. A superbly edited film and one that doesn’t miss a beat.

The production designs by Carlos Conti (On the Road, The Motorcycle Diaries) are top-notch. The era is brought to life in a compelling and believable way. The designs feel realistic and true to the time of the story. A exceptional effort all around.

The costume designs by Cláudia Kopke (Casa de Areia, Elite Squad) are well done and work well for the cast of characters. Kopke did a stellar job for the entire cast of the family characters and their life story feels all the more authentic as a result. The efforts are impressive in spades.

The screenplay by Murilo Hauser (Invisible Life) and Heitor Lorega (Mariner of the Mountains) is well-penned and haunting. The script has impeccable dialogue and storytelling. The script manages to tell audiences a gripping story about resilience and survival while struggling with government corruption while also showing a deeply human side of the story that is fundamentally relatable and inspiring. A beautiful script.

Directed by Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries, Central Station), I’m Still Here is a masterpiece. It is a tour-de-force. I’m Still Here is remarkable filmmaking on every level. There is something special to be said about the film and the efforts of director Salles. A gut-wrenching story and one brought to life vividly. A must-see.
