Around the TV history world, it probably goes without saying that I Love Lucy is remembered as not just an iconic TV show that has shaped popular culture around the world since the 1950s, but arguably the iconic TV show that has shaped popular culture around the world since the 1950s. The series is famous for both its use of character and situational humor and its importance within the industry for pioneering different techniques still used in TV today. It's safe to say that most people have heard of the show, and most of those have probably seen it in some form or fashion, at least its most iconic, TV-defining moments and at least a moment or two more of the show on reruns (reruns being something the show actually "accidentally" pioneered during Ball's pregnancy in Season 2). This boxed set offers fans and newcomers alike the opportunity to watch the show in its entirety and enjoy all the classic comedic moments. Note that Seasons 7-9 included in the set are actually the spin off show The Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show (The Lucy-Desi Show) which originally aired after I Love Lucy ended (these were also hour-long shows rather than half-hour). Also note that this set releases a full decade after Paramount released season one to Blu-ray (season season two released a bit later). Both of those seasons are included here and with identical discs.

I Love Lucy's main premise delivers an inside look into the lives of middle class New Yorkers Lucy and Ricky Ricardo (Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz) as an untalented Lucy schemes ways to appear on stage at Ricky's nightclub, often with the help of neighbors Fred and Ethel Mertz (William Frawley and Vivian Vance). The show places heavy emphasis on situational comedy to amplify the main narrative push, and it is carried by both exceptionally strong writing and superb acting that consistently pair together to create small-screen magic the likes of which was never really seen before on TV and has only rarely been approached since.

Indeed, it is that cast excellence, its acting prowess, and the players' natural charm and camaraderie that elevates the show to exceptionally high heights. As is true of most successful TV comedies, I Love Lucy finds its stride through a cast that effortlessly and naturally works together, one off another, to not just create humor but to amplify humor. It's very clear that the cast knows one another well (Ball and Arnaz were married off screen) and it uses that familiarity to full advantage. Lucille Ball (Lucy Ricardo), Desi Arnaz (Ricky Ricardo), William Frawley (Fred Mertz), and Vivian Vance (Ethel Mertz) manage to create a collective presence that allows viewers to see them as their characters instead of simply actors playing a part, and they capture that magic with a breezy, familiar quality that few shows ever approach, never mind match. Of course, they have some technical help along the way as well. One of the pioneering techniques used by the series was the process of shooting the show in front of a live audience (originally to help amplify the comedy) which meant the humor had to be nailed down on take one, making that camaraderie more important than ever. This core quartet succeeds in spades and the show, as a result, has become more than iconic: it's a standard bearer in the entirety of the TV medium that is still a standard for situational and character comedy that even today serves as inspirations to numerous actors, actresses, and writers.

And the legacy continues. "Lucy and Ethel" remains synonymous with "best friends." Ball and Vance do a remarkable job throughout the series, working off one another to create classic comedic situations and elicit laughs from both the studio and home audiences. Ball and Arnaz also create a believable screen couple. Arnaz plays the long-suffering husband of a mischievous and conniving wife with uncanny accuracy as he deals with Lucy's means and ways throughout the series run.

It seems a little counterproductive to write much further on the show. There are countless web articles and numerous books (from Golden Books to thick biographies) on the show, its characters, and its actors, so suffice it to say I cannot really add anything else to what is already out there. I will say that the reviews of Blu-ray seasons one and two offer a few more personal insights, so those are good starting points for those just getting into the world of I Love Lucy.

I Love Lucy: The Complete Series Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality 

CBS/Paramount brings I Love Lucy (as well as The Lucy-Desi Show) to Blu-ray with a collection of 1080p transfers that are not dissimilar from the quality found on the seasons one and two issues (click here for a season one review and here for a season two review). Throughout, the image does maintain the original 4x3 aspect ratio (placing vertical "black bars" on the 1.78:1 HD display) and is, of course, presented in black-and-white. The image ranges from solid to serviceable to suffering. First a few words on the black and white scale. Overall, viewers will find good contrast to the black and white elements, including healthy blacks and nicely balanced whites, the former never appearing crushed and the latter, while not dazzling, never pushing overtly creamy, either, though favoring a creamier appearance to crisp white to be sure.

Like seasons one and two before them, the remaining seasons struggle too really look the part of a shot on film classic that should be beautifully grainy and naturally sharp. Instead, the best the show can muster is "decent." It shifts around quite a bit from looking borderline faithful for clarity and grain to frequently appearing fairly inorganic, with dense, snowy grain and good-not-great detailing. For the most part it looks good, but it never looks great. It flirts with great very intermittently, but for the most part it's clear some serious work is needed. Season five, however, sees a dramatic dip in quality. It looks smoothed over, soft, far less sharp than the previous season, and even the snowy grain seems reduced to leave the image looks flat and bland. It's a fairly frustrating experience, on the whole. If one is watching from, say, ten feet back on a 75" screen it's going to look OK, but cut that distance in half and the warts really start to stand out.

There is little bit of aliasing on clothing with challenging patterns (look at Ethel's top in the season four episode "Ethel's Birthday" around the 4-minute mark or so). Aliasing, some jagged edges here and there, and various examples of light speckles and pops are in evidence throughout the series run. This could stand to look a whole lot better, but it it doesn't look band enough to do more than through up a caution flag.

I Love Lucy: The Complete Series Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality 

Paramount brings I Love Lucy: The Complete Series to Blu-ray with two soundtracks (LPCM 2.0 tracks for the first two seasons and DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 lossless soundtracks with the later seasons; please click here for a season one review and here for a season two review). The DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 soundtracks which accompany the later seasons are straightforward and unremarkable. They are effective at the base level, conveying the show's audio requirements with necessary clarity but not much more. Generally speaking, everything is just bunched up in the middle area: music, dialogue, crowd laughter, all the key sonic ingredients at play in any given episode. These are presented with adequate clarity. Certainly the opening title music sounds a little compact and muddy, but music can and does open up a little more to superior definition and fidelity in spots. Laughter is neither wonderfully defined nor poorly defined, and the center placement doesn't really allow it to be set apart form everything else. Dialogue is clear and centers nicely in the absence of a dedicated center speaker.

This Blu-ray release of I Love Lucy: The Complete Series contains a massive, sprawling, all encompassing, gargantuan...you get the idea...collection of extra material. Every disc is packed. The set ships in the standard oversized clamshell type case that is the norm with bulk Paramount TV releases, which means disc stacked and staggered all over the place, discs falling out with regularity, and discs getting jumbled up. It's not ideal, but it is what it is. One might have thought that for a show so iconic as this it might have earned a more robust package but, nope, it's the usual Paramount case solution to complete TV series releases.

This boxed set edition of I Love Lucy offers viewers the opportunity to both watch the show and take a deep dive into its history through the copious supplements included. Fans will not grow bored for many, many days...probably weeks or even months...making this a great value proposition for just about anyone: fans, the curious, collectors, anyone looking for a really packed Blu-ray TV set. It doesn't get much more iconic than the show or much more packed than this boxed set. The video and audio qualities are decent but could have been improved upon, the video in particular. Recommend!
