Feeling a sudden sense of deja vu? Or perhaps you're just feeling a sudden sense of deja vu? Whatever the case, you're probably feeling a sudden sense of deja vu. Thus goes Hollywood's C-tier requeling of the horror movies of yesteryear. While no one was asking for a reboot/sequel of the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise, which already had (at best) its heyday with a coupla films and (at worst) its chances with a follow-up TV series, here... we... go! The aptly titled I Know What You Did Last Summer (how original) gathers a new cast of manslaughterin' teens and pits them against a new incarnation of The Hook, freshly hellbent on revenge. It also exhumes Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., limping in from the previous films with more to prove than they have to offer. The result is a paint-by-numbers reboot that barely qualifies as a proper sequel, one with an ending that will leave newcomers and longtime fans howling at the screen and crying foul.

While the standard Blu-ray release of I Know What You Did Last Summer offered a strong video presentation, the 4K UltraHD version takes full advantage of the enhanced color and contrast of its Dolby Vision capabilities. The film is still visually darker and drearier than its 1997 predecessor but contrast is striking and primaries pack punch, especially the reds of sweaters, curtains and, of course, blood sprays, splashes and spatters. There isn't any red crush to contend with either, which isn't always the case, though black crush still rears its head. (Less of an issue and more of a choice, fortunately, as it's wholly optical and clearly intentional as opposed to an encoding flaw.) Skintones are also quite lovely, despite the occasional bit of ruddiness in Freddie Prinze Jr.'s leathered face (blame the makeup rather than the cinematography), and saturation is impeccable. Detail is exceptional as well, with crisp, clean edge definition and beautifully resolved fine textures. There's even a slightly notable uptick in visible-to-the-naked-eye subtleties, which isn't necessarily always the case with 4K releases. Add to that a lack of banding, blocking and errant noise, the roomy 4K disc allows for a comfy bitrate that leaves no place for such nuisances.

As Atmos experiences go, I Know What You Did Last Summer is nearly there. Where is there? That mythical region that brushes up against words like "utterly realistic" and "perfect." The film still sounds like it offers more of a manufactured soundscape than "thrust into the situation" believability, but it traces back to intentional choices by the sound designers to heighten the stalkings and killings by any means necessary. The results aren't problematic or "average" by any means, mind you. This is Atmos through and through, complete with rippling surround activity, directionality precise upper speaker involvement and plenty of directionally accurate rear channel fun. LFE output is hearty and hefty as well, with an enormous amount of power invested in the music, kill effects and pulse-pounding chase beats. Dialogue remains crystal clear and intelligible throughout it all, and dynamics are terrific. Is it better than the standard Blu-ray's DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround track? Yes. So why does it earn the same score? Because both tracks have been compared to the best each format has to offer, and while this isn't a leader of any pack, it's still a vicious, remarkable little beastie with serious teeth and bite.

The latest installment of the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise hardly reinvents the genre, but I suppose it's a semi-decent entry, all things considered. It stumbles more often than it hits its stride, and brace yourself for a wacky, nonsensical ending, but there's enough here for the enjoyment of those with low bars. Sony's 4K release is better, thanks to excellent audio and video presentations, as well as handsome SteelBook packaging, but the film's small collection of extras leave a lot to be desired.
