How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World 3D Blu-ray Movie Review

A worthy conclusion to the beloved animated series

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard July 6, 2019

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is the final chapter in the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy and it's a perfect book-end to the successful animated franchise. The film has an enormous amount of heart, charisma, and energy behind every frame and the story brings the franchise to a satisfactory close which will please longtime fans of the series.

The final installment of the series once again reunites audiences with the story of the strong viking Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and his close dragon friend, Toothless as they face down some brand new enemies posing threats to their loved ones and each is faced with romantic engagements. Ultimately, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is an exciting action-adventure which leads to an emotional and grand finale.

A step beyond one's imagination

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World 3D Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

Viewing How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World in 3D is a sheer delight from beginning to end. Presented with a gorgeous 1080p MPEG-4 MVC encoded presentation, this is a superbly textured encode which beautifully delivers an exceptional 3D image. The film looks superb on this release and 3D enthusiasts will be pleased by the high level of detail given to the presentation. Though 3D pop-out effects are somewhat limited on this presentation (though there are some impressive standout moments sprinkled throughout the feature), the 3D for this film is all about the depth and level of immersion given to the film's animated world.

The 3D is incredibly immersive and rates as a medium-to-high level of 3D depth from beginning to end. This enhances the entire experience of viewing the film, especially during some of the more colorful sequences which pop with visual splendor and will have audiences gasping with wonder at the fantastic imagery. During some of the feature's night-time sequences, the 3D image is a little less impressive than during the more colorful animated scenes but these moments are never distracting from the overall experience.

On my display, the image appeared free from issues of crosstalk or other 3D conversion ailments. This is a first-rate presentation which helps to greatly enhance the filmmaking. 3D fanatics should consider it a must-see 3D experience.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World 3D Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

Unlike some 3D Blu-ray releases (where the superior atmospheric-based audio tracks are relegated only to the 4K disc presentation), the disc includes a Dolby Atmos lossless presentation which impresses at every turn. The object-based Atmos audio is far more engaging.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World 3D Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is a great conclusion to the beloved film series. I was deeply moved by the conclusion to this grand story and loved the way it brought closure to the films and these characters. Toothless remains one of the most adorable animated characters created in any franchise and it was great to see the romantic sub-plot play out for the sweet dragon. The film has plenty of heart and humor and is a must-see for fans.

The 3D presentation is superb and offers an impressive level of depth and immersion which makes this 3D Blu-ray release an enticing and worthwhile way of experiencing the film. 3D film fans shouldn't miss this exceptional release. With animation that truly pops with brilliant colors and a gorgeous style in every frame of the film, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is a perfect showcase for why 3D remains as an important tool in a filmmaker's arsenal. Highly recommended.
