How to Have Sex is a compelling drama exploring the theme of consent. Winner of the Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival. Starring Mia McKenna-Bruce, Shaun Thomas, and Lara Peake.
Explores the lives of three British teenage girls who go on a vacation together where the girls go out clubbing, drinking, and looking for hook ups – hoping to having the time of their lives. Yet the lines between consent and assault become blurred momentarily and perhaps the trip isn’t the dream it seemed destined to be.
The performances are excellent. The three leading actresses do a good job with their respective roles. The ensemble plays well off of each other and each actress delves into their part with a dedication – bringing their roles to life. The vibrancy of the performances is one of the best qualities of the film.

The score composed by James Jacob (What It Feels Like for A Girl, National Theatre Live: Inter Alia) is engaging and well-done. The music plays a big role in the filmmaking. The music plays a vital role in storytelling as the backdrop of partying and clubbing is essential to the storyline.
The cinematography by Nicolas Canniccioni (Rojek, The Little Girl Who Was Too Fond of Matches) is exquisite. The beautiful visuals of the film make it all the more compelling. The visuals are striking, haunting, and memorable. The bright and colorful aesthetic is a good contrast to the serious themes explored in the film.
Edited by Fin Oates (Warfare, Kaos), How to Have Sex is a well paced production. The editing is well done. The flow of the film allows the filmmakers time to explore the characters and their intimate moments as friends.
The production designs by Luke Moran-Morris (Blue Weekend, Juice) are excellent and make a mark. The designs certainly showcase wonderful talent. The designs add to the storytelling. As does the efforts of art director Liza Tsouloupa (Senior Citizen, Hot Milk).
The costume designs by George Buxton (Femme, Smokers Delight) are well thought out for the cast of characters. The respective roles are showcased well. The actors have good costumes and it certainly helps the storytelling to feel all the more realistic.
Written and directed by Molly Manning Walker (in her feature directorial debut), How to Have Sex is a compelling drama well-told. The filmmaking is exquisite. Walker is a natural talent and it will certainly great to see future projects from the filmmaker arrive in the future. How to Have Sex is a smart and observative film about relationships and the nature of consent – showing how conversations are essential to good choices in sexual relationships. How to Have Sex is an intelligent and moving story and also a great tale about female friendship and identity.

Released on Blu-ray by MUBI, How to Have Sex is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high-definition in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1 widescreen. The high-definition video is exceptional looking. The crisp and clear visuals are fantastic. The cinematography is well preserved on the release. The encoding is top-notch, too.

The release is presented in English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound and an optional DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 option is also available. The surround sound is actively utilized in the film and it makes a big difference with regards to the clubbing sequences. The dancefloor feels alive throughout the presentation.
