Hot & Saucy Pizza Girls Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Brian Orndorf June 17, 2018

Perhaps during a more innocent time in adult cinema, the concept of the pizza delivery guy working his way through oversexed customers was the standard vision set when imagining the cartoonish banality of the industry. 1978’s “Hot & Saucy Pizza Girls” aims to play with the cliché, following a bare-bones plot that follows a group of young women as they make their delivery rounds, jumping into customer beds with enthusiasm. Writer John T. Chapman has some rather strange ideas to help pad the picture between sexual antics, but director Bob Chinn keeps the movie largely carefree and simplistic, making sure to pay close attention to the fantasy of ease and access when it comes to the experiences of these special pizzeria employees.

In California, the Country Girl Pizza Parlor has found a new way to make money, becoming a front for a prostitution operation overseen by owner John (John Holmes). New to the gang is Ann Chovy (Desiree Cousteau), a flighty young woman who’s eager to prove herself, sent out on numerous jobs with co-workers Shakey (Laurien Dominique), Gino (Candida Royalle), and Celeste (Christine De Shaffer). While the staff gets up close and personal with customers placing special orders, Inspector Blackie (John Seeman) tracks their movements, preparing to expose the pizzeria. Also concerning is the mystery of the Night Chicken, a costumed beast who preys on the pizza girls, with a trio of fried chicken restauranteurs trying to shut down the popular establishment before it destroys their business.

Chinn is out to create a good time with “Hot & Saucy Pizza Girls,” laying into the late-1970s, Southern Californian atmosphere by have the women put on a bit of a skateboarding demonstration during the main titles, showcasing their ease on wheels as they glide their way to numerous jobs. It’s not exactly “Dogtown and Z-Boys,” but it’s fun, watching the stars navigate around city streets before the story, or what passes for structure, kicks in.

“Hot & Saucy Pizza Girls” doesn’t add up to much, mostly following the delivery clerks as they visit clients, decoding order notes to size up what the customers expect, with John maintaining his pimp-like presence back at the parlor, weirdly refusing those who inquire about male employees and their “salami.” The chicken-slinging boys are the most defined of the bunch, enjoying time with the delivery girls, but they’re worried that such a racket will take down their empire, frantically trying to come up with something to halt John’s progress. And there’s the whole Night Chicken business, though Chinn doesn’t dare go past the suggestion of a large bird who rapes young women, making a particularly tone-deaf choice for comedy in a movie that’s better off with harmless shenanigans.

The AVC encode image (1.85:1 aspect ratio) presentation captures rich colors for the "Hot & Saucy Pizza Girls" world, which is loaded with deep reds on restaurant decorations and toppings, along with logo t-shirts and skateboard paint jobs. City adventures also bring out varied hues and bright greenery. Skintones are natural, retaining a distinct pinkness to full body exposure. Detail reaches as far as the original cinematography allows, with a softer but pleasing examination of room decoration and skin particulars, though close-ups are periodically out of focus. Delineation isn't troublesome. Source isn't in terrific shape, with a few jumpy frames, speckling, scratches, and rough reel changes. However, nothing's distracting, possibly adding to the viewing experience.

Age is more apparent during the 2.0 DTS-HD MA sound mix, which offers a slightly muddier listening event. Dialogue exchanges are thickened, a tad fuzzy at times, but complete unintelligibility isn't a concern, partially due to emphatic performances. Soundtrack selections and scoring aren't crisp, but the soft rock mood is set, backing the action without overwhelming it.

Hot & Saucy Pizza Girls Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

"Hot & Saucy Pizza Girls" digs more into Ann's crisis of fidelity when she finds the softer side of Blackie, but that's generally it for plot. Chinn wisely trusts in the appeal of random encounters and playful exaggeration, while the film itself is an amusing time capsule of the era and adult cinema's reputation to the outside world.
