Hocus Pocus 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman September 16, 2020

Disney and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive SteelBook release for the popular 1993 film 'Hocus Pocus.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Purple and black are the primary colors to be found on Disney's smooth and glossy Steelbook which will display handling fingerprints, primarily in its black areas. The front is a bit busy, as Disney's modern artwork is apt to be. The scene is set outside a cemetery with the three heroes -- Max, Dani, and Allison -- seen from the rear in silhouette and obviously startled to find the three witches -- Mary, Winnie, and Sarah -- floating above in front of a full moon. The area inside the cemetery, beyond a wrought iron gate, is a hazy purple with some bare tree branches here and there and a tall house in the background on the right. The bottom quarter of the SteelBook is a black terrain which holds the film's title, debossed and in purple, with a white Disney logo above. The rear panel is much the same, with the black terrain at the bottom and a hazy purple cemetery scene above. A tombstone atop of which sits a black cat features prominently, as does a zombie rising out of the ground. A tall tree appears on the left and some other bare branches are scattered around the background. Small white copyright and model number text can be found on the bottom left and right, respectively. The spine is a light purple color. The film's title appears center in a darker purple accompanied by white "Disney" text. An UltraHD logo has been placed at the top while a white Disney logo can be seen at the bottom.

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features a still depicting the three witches, from left to right: Mary, Winnie, and Sarah -- smiling as they look at the Spellbook. Winnie is particularly enthusiastic in her analysis.

Hocus Pocus 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

Disney likes its busy artwork, and this one fits right in. It's at least busy in an interesting way and it's complimentary to the movie's tone. There's some interesting imagery on the front and back and the colors are great, too. The UHD's picture quality is strong and the carryover audio and supplements are fine. Recommended.
