Overview

Her Body (2023)

Her Body is inspired by a true story which took place in Prague in the 1990s. Andrea, a young, top high diver, is training for the Atlanta Olympics. Her parents and coach – but especially Andrea herself – value success and performance above everything else. Her athletic career, however, unexpectedly comes to an end due to an injury. Because her body is the only tool she has used for success, Andrea finds a new use for it – in the porn industry. She soon gains fame, independence, and the freedom to finally do what she wants. But in the end, she is forced to slow down.

Her Body Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman March 26, 2025

It's not often that a pronoun in a film's title may be a subliminal clue as to the film's very content, but that "her" in Her Body might have reasonably be changed to My Body. That difference might have indicated that the story on (spinal?) tap here is a "first person" account of a real life young Czech diver named Andrea Absolonová (Natália Germáni) who suffers a devastating injury to her back and neck, and who insists on "dominion" over her body after the accident. Though she's able to recover from the issue, she isn't able to continue chasing her Olympic dreams and through a series of events actually ends up in the adult film industry. That makes the "her" in the title somehow more provocative, since it may indicate, if not quite overtly, the "objectification" of Absolonová, though the film tries to frame these unlikely if evidently true events within the context of "female empowerment".

There's an "uncensored version" label prominently featured on the front cover of this release, and that may indicate completely overtly that at least this unredacted iteration tends to probably be as exploitative as any "career choices" that Absolonová made. There is probably needless content here once Absolonová makes the "switch" into porn documenting a number of scenes, in vignettes that may in fact indicate what Absolonová in her day to day work environment (yes, it's funny to think of it like that), but which frankly may detract from the film's underlying message of a woman deciding she can do whatever she wants with herself.

The film offers a real showcase for Natália Germáni, and the sheer improbability of the tale is undeniably riveting, but I frankly think I might have preferred the "censored" version of the narrative. Suffice it to say there were no happy endings for Absolonová one way or the other, as the film depicts in its closing moments. That gives Absolonová's story an unavoidably melancholic aftertaste, which also may at least slightly undercut the idea that Absolonová's "self empowerment" was able to overcome any and all obstacles.

Her Body Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  5.0 of 5

Her Body is presented on Blu-ray courtesy of Film Movement with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.85:1. As of the writing of this review there's not really any technical information on the IMDb and I haven't been able to dredge up anything authoritative on the internet, but this is a really nicely sharp and generally well detailed digital capture that I'm assuming had a 2K DI. A surplus of at times extreme close-ups helps to buoy (sorry, water pun unavoidable) fine detail levels, but general detail levels throughout the presentation are excellent. The palette looks natural and is really nicely suffused. There are some very minor and fleeting flirtations with banding during some scenes with water where light values change.

Her Body Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

Her Body features Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and LPCM 2.0 options in the original Czech. The surround track nicely opens up the soundstage in any number of scenes, including some of the vignettes in cavernous swimming venues, but also in a couple of club scenes where Absolonová cuts loose. Ambient environmental sounds engage the side and rear channels throughout the film. Dialogue is rendered cleanly and clearly throughout. Optional English subtitles are available.

Her Body Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  1.0 of 5

  • Aid Kid, Justin Lavash & Maryland - Climb Up High (HD; 3:04) is a quasi music video.

  • Her Body Trailer (HD; 1:26)
As with many releases from this label, the main menu also has an About Film Movement option that brings up a text box with information.

The sleeve has an inner print. The original exclusive Vinegar Syndrome release evidently had a slipcover, but the review copy sent to me did not.

Her Body Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

Absolonová's story is amazing enough without this "uncensored" version's probably needless and decidedly (at least for me) non-titillating recreations of some of her work in porn. Otherwise, though, this is obviously a very unusual story and Natália Germáni is outstanding. Technical merits are solid, though supplements are minimal. Recommended.
