Happy Death Day 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

A star making performance by Jessica Rothe.

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard June 29, 2022

Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) finds herself in an unexplainable time-loop in which she repeatedly gets murdered day-after-day (reliving the same day over and over again in an endless loop). A killer is on the loose and there isn’t much time to solve her murder. A slasher Groundhog Day, Happy Death Day explores a strange mind-trip of a journey against time as Gelbman seeks her killer (to solve the crime and stop the time loop).

The nail in the coffin.

Happy Death Day 4K Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

Arriving on 4K UHD from Shout Factory, Happy Death Day is presented in 2160p HEVC / H.265 in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.39:1 widescreen. The release offers the film in 4K 2160p. The presentation is outstanding and is sure to be a huge pleaser for fans of the film. With a remarkably sharp presentation and excellent color reproduction, Happy Death Day shines with an excellent level of detail and finesse.

The high dynamic range (HDR) element also adds to the fun. Presented in HDR10, the HDR enhances the visual element with a wider color range. The film has wonderfully engaging visuals and the encoding manages to showcase both character moments and horror sequences with equally impressive splendor. The image quality is as sharp as a butcher's knife and a perfect showcase for the genre filmmaking.

Happy Death Day 4K Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

The release retains the same excellent DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound presentation as included on the original Blu-ray release. The lossless, 24 bit, high-resolution audio track is remarkably crisp and dynamic sounding. Both the score and sound effects sound impressive in high-resolution and the audio encoding is a perfect match to the excellent visual qualities of the encoding.

Happy Death Day 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.5 of 5

The release includes a NEW audio commentary featuring Director Christopher Landon and Actress Jessica Rothe. The audio commentary is provided on the 4K UHD disc and the Blu-ray disc. The original supplemental package is provided on the included Blu-ray in the 4K & Blu-ray combo pack release. For additional information on the supplemental package, please refer to the Blu-ray review by my colleague Martin Liebman.

Happy Death Day 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

Happy Death Day is an enormously entertaining horror comedy with an outstanding lead performance from Jessica Rothe. Directed by Christopher Landon (FreakyScouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse), Happy Death Day takes an ingenious concept and runs with it. The filmmaking is excellent and the experience is altogether enjoyable. The 4K UHD features a first-rate 2160p presentation and excellent lossless audio. Highly recommended.
