Happy Death Day 2U is an entertaining sequel to the original horror comedy. The second installment in the horror franchise, Happy Death Day 2U picks up the saga following the events of the first film as Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) unexpectedly finds herself in a brand-new time loop with another killer causing havoc. Chaos theory arrives with the truth behind the cause of the time-loops and a new scenario enters the killer equation.
4K UHD... black and blue.

Arriving on 4K UHD from Shout Factory, Happy Death Day 2U is presented in 2160p HEVC / H.265 in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.39:1 widescreen. As with the original Happy Death Day feature-film presentation, Happy Death Day 2U is another fantastic 4K UHD presentation. The release has a wonderful color spectrum and the high dynamic range (HDR10) encoding adds a lot to the viewing experience.
The encode is exceptional: bright, colorful, and vivid while retaining a filmic aesthetic. Everything looks crisp and pristine: the production design is enhanced tenfold by the HDR use and implementation. Actress Jessica Rothe is even more radiant in 4K UHD and fans of the actress will be pleased with the presentation. The 4K encode preserves fine detail exceptionally well.
Happy Death Day 2U is presented in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound. The lossless, high-resolution, 24 bit depth audio sounds pristine and detailed. The audio capably handles the score, soundstage, and sound effects. The 4K UHD release doesn't include a Atmos audio presentation (the first Happy Death Day 4K UHD doesn't either) but the 24 bit depth audio is remarkable sounding and it is hard to imagine anyone being too fussed over the lack of Atmos. An exceptional sound presentation and an excellent match to the high-quality video presentation.
The 4K UHD release includes a NEW audio commentary featuring director Christopher Landon, actress Jessica Rothe, and actress Sarah Yarkin. The release also retains the supplemental package as featured on the original Blu-ray release from Universal Studios. The extras are included on the accompanying Blu-ray in the 4K UHD & Blu-ray combo pack. For more information on the supplemental package, please refer to the Blu-ray review from my colleague Martin Liebman.
Happy Death Day 2U is an entertaining follow up to the original horror comedy. The sequel includes the return of Jessica Rothe as a sexy college student stuck in an unending time loop where she finds herself repeatedly murdered – though this time, the tables have turned and she has some cards up her sleeve to even the playing field. The sequel opens up the story by exploring the origin of the time loop and how it was created. While the Happy Death Day sequel is not as creative as the first installment in the franchise, Happy Death Day 2U is entertaining fun and well worth a watch. The 4K UHD release features a top-notch 2160p presentation and a lossless audio encode. Highly recommended.
