Hang 'Em High 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Dr. Svet Atanasov June 21, 2026

Ted Post's "Hang 'Em High" (1968) arrives on 4K Blu-ray courtesy of Kino Lorber. The supplemental features on the release include exclusive new audio commentary by critic Steve Mitchell; archival audio commentary by critics Lem Dobbs and Nick Redman; and vintage promotional materials for the film. In English, with optional English SDH subtitles for the main feature. Region-Free.

Some people believe that Hang ‘Em High is an underappreciated film in Clint Eastwood’s body of work. Some people also believe that had Eastwood not made the three legendary spaghetti westerns with Sergio Leone, which transformed him into an international star, Hang ‘Em High would have been considered one of his best films.

True or false? Consider the following:

Some of the same people either downgrade the significance of or simply ignore two crucial details. The first is that Eastwood looks very good in Hang ‘Em High because of the invaluable experience he gained while working with Leone. In other words, without the three legendary spaghetti westerns, the quality of Eastwood’s performance in Hang ‘Em High would not have been the same. Obviously, Hang ‘Em High would not have been the same film, either. The second is that Hang ‘Em High is not a one-man show. Hang ‘Em High has a rather remarkable cast of outstanding character actors who routinely make Eastwood look very good. Had Eastwood not made the three legendary spaghetti westerns, and evolved into an international star, it is unclear how many of these outstanding character actors would have appeared in Hang ‘Em High.

Before directing Hang ‘Em High, Ted Post had done a significant amount of work in the TV industry. Unsurprisingly, compositionally and stylistically, Hang ‘Em High does not have much in common with the three legendary spaghetti westerns. Hang ‘Em High produces different atmosphere as well. Interestingly, Eastwood’s character transformation is unaffected by any of these changes, which is a rather remarkable development considering what their impact could have been. For this reason, Hang ‘Em High deserves to be described as a special film in Eastwood’s body of work.

It is probably fair to describe the bulk of the content in Hang ‘Em High as a reimagination of the true story of Judge Isaac Charles Parker, better known as the Hanging Judge, who presided over a large portion of Arkansas from 1875 to 1896. In Hang ‘Em High, Judge Fenton (Pat Hingle) hires ex-lawman Jed Cooper (Eastwood), who has miraculously survived a brutal lynching, to be his Marshal, and soon after, the two begin arresting and executing some of the area’s biggest criminals. Judge Fenton believes that it is the only way to uphold the law and keep the area safe. Cooper helps him while hunting the men who lynched him. Eventually, the two begin disagreeing, and Copper meets a hurt woman (Inger Stevens) who melts his heart.

The blending of fictionalized and authentic material is done quite well. For example, a significant amount of research was conducted to ensure that the hangings are accurately recreated. The lynching looks very authentic as well. Eastwood insisted that Post does not use a double for it and endured all the abuse while the camera was rolling. However, some of the old criticism that a few key developments take too many liberties is justified, too. The most problematic is in the second half, where Eastwood miraculously survives another attempt on his life.

Hang ‘Em High is a very good, enormously enjoyable film, and Eastwood looks terrific in it. However, whenever it is addressed, it should always be stated that it is a team effort, with outstanding contributions from various great character actors.

Hang 'Em High 4K Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

Kino Lorber's release of Hang 'Em High is a 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray combo pack release. The 4K Blu-ray is Region-Free. However, the Blu-ray is Region-A "locked".

Please note that all screencaptures included with this review are taken from the Blu-ray. We have not provided screencaptures from the 4K Blu-ray.

The release presents an exclusive new 4K restoration of Hang 'Em High, sourced from the original camera negative, on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray. In native 4K the 4K restoration can be viewed with Dolby Vision and HDR grades. I chose to view it with HDR. Also, I spent time with its 1080p presentation on the Blu-ray.

In America, Hang 'Em High has been released on Blu-ray several times. I have MGM's original Blu-ray release, which is sourced from an older but pretty decent organic master. The new 4K restoration is a significant upgrade in quality, whether it is viewed in native 4K or 1080p. It produces visuals with noticeably better delineation, clarity, and depth, as well as strong density levels. On a large screen, all footage, darker and brighter, reveals meaningful improvements. Obviously, all density fluctuations introduced by the original cinematography introduces are retained, but even a few of them appear slightly more attractive. I would describe color reproduction and balance as good. Primaries and supporting nuance are lusher and healthier. I felt that in a few sequences primary blue and blue nuances could have been a tad more prominent, but the overall temperature of the visuals remains convincing. Image stability is excellent. I noticed a few blemishes. I think that the bigger ones are slightly exacerbated in native 4K, so they probably should have been addressed. However, they are not distracting.

Hang 'Em High 4K Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

There are two standard audio tracks on this release: English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0. Optional English SDH subtitles are provided for the main feature.

I decided to view the entire film with the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. First, I have to say that the music score is tremendous and frequently gives the film the same epic quality that Ennio Morricone's scores add to various spaghetti westerns. It sounds fantastic. The action material sounds very good, too. However, I believe that in some areas balance could have been manage better. The first thirty minutes have several such areas. The dialogue is clear and easy to follow. Also, I did not encounter any encoding anomalies to report in our review.

Hang 'Em High 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

Hang 'Em High deserves to be praised because it is a very good western, with an appropriately excellent Clint Eastwood. However, whenever it is praised, it should always be stated that it is a team effort, with outstanding contributions from various great character actors. Kino Lorber's combo pack introduces a very good new 4K restoration, which looks equally satisfying on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
