Hammerhead Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman June 17, 2019

'Hammerhead,' a.k.a. 'Sharkman,' is currently only available as part of a two-disc, eight-film 'Meg-A-Shark' collection from Echo Bridge. The set also includes 'Toxic Shark,' 'Shark in Venice,' 'Malibu Shark Attack,' 'Shark Attack,' 'Shark Attack 2,' 'Shark Attack 3: Megalodon,' and 'Shark Zone.'

A researcher named “King” (Jeffrey Combs) may have solved the “Stem Cell Riddle” and his research could change the course of humanity forever. His son reportedly passed away five years ago from cancer and was once engaged to be married to a woman named Amelia (Hunter Tylo) who is now a top scientist at a pharmaceutical company interested in buying King’s research. It turns out King’s son is not dead but is instead now a hybrid man and Hammerhead shark; King’s research led him to combine shark DNA -- which is immune to cancer -- with human DNA to create the next evolution of the human species. When Amelia, Tom (William Forsythe), and additional company representatives travel to King’s isolated lair, King turns on them for treason and sets his horrible creations on them.

Hammerhead Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  3.5 of 5

Hammerhead arrives on Blu-ray with a 1080p, 1.78:1-framed presentation. This is a fairly solid image. There are no major detractions and the image maintains a pleasing film-like appearance. Details are sturdy, enjoying a fairly strong level of textural complexity which is evident on faces, clothes and environments alike. The special effects are cheap but some gore and a few practical elements are handled well. Colors are nicely saturated. There is room for improved contrast but essential skin, clothes, and natural greenery are by-and-large fine. No significant source or encode artifacts are in evidence.

Hammerhead Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  3.5 of 5

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack is more than adequate. Music enjoys organic spacing and fine general clarity throughout the range. Gunfire does not pop with lifelike intensity but it's also not wanting for significantly more oomph, either. An explosion in chapter five packs a fairly healthy wallop. A few examples of environmental ambience present nicely. Dialogue is delivered clearly from a firm front-center location.

Hammerhead Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  2.5 of 5

Hammerhead isn't a horrible movie, a surprise given the nature of the plot, which is part macabre and part comical. The film certainly benefits from the mere presence of both Combs and Forsythe, both of whom give the movie an honest effort. The featureless Blu-ray delivers solid video and audio. Worth a look.
