Hammer Films: The Ultimate Collection Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman December 22, 2020

Mill Creek has released a twenty-film Hammer collection. Many of these films are new to Blu-ray in North America but some were previously released both by Mill Creek and other distributors over the years. Each film has been individually reviewed. Find links below. A few bonus features are included on the final disc of this set.

The following films are included in the set. These links point to the review page for each and can be referenced for video, audio, and where applicable supplements as well.

Hammer Films: The Ultimate Collection Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  3.0 of 5

See the links above for video reviews of each film. Note that the total "Video" score above is not a strict average but rather a general consensus following a viewing of all twenty films in this set.

Hammer Films: The Ultimate Collection Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  2.5 of 5

See the links above for audio reviews of each film. Note that the total "Audio" score above is not a strict average but rather a general consensus following a viewing of all twenty films in this set.

Hammer Films: The Ultimate Collection Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.5 of 5

Several of the films include audio commentary tracks but there are no other extras on any of the discs with the exception of the final disc which includes the supplements below. The set ships in an oversized Amaray case. Every disc sits on its own hub; there are no disc stacks. The case ships inside a slip box.

  • Hammer at Columbia Pictures (1080p, 11:03): Author/Historian C. Courtney Joyner takes a look at the history of the Hammer brand with many specifics about the people and the movies that made the brand a legendary cinema success and a hit for Columbia Pictures. Joyner briefly looks at several of the films featured in this collection.
  • The Actors of Hammer Film (1080p, 8:20): Author/Film Historian David Del Valle shares some history and fun facts about several of the stars who appear in key Hammer films, such as Stefanie Powers, Tom Poston, and Susan Strasberg.
  • Curse of the Mummy's Tomb Retrospective (1080p, 7:32): Author/Hammer Historian Richard Klemensen recalls the studio politics and follows to share some historical data, technical insight, and production house anecdotes with attention paid the story behind the making of The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb. This is a voiceover supplement with film clips and stills playing on screen.
  • The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll Retrospective (1080p, 9:35): Klemensen returns to discuss the film from which the title of this supplement shares its name, again with the same structure and the same broader context as the previous in order to better dissect the film proper.

Hammer Films: The Ultimate Collection Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.0 of 5

Mill Creek's Hammer Ultimate Collection is pretty much par for the studio's output. For the most part, each Blu-ray presentation is solid, demonstrating room for video and audio improvement but more than satisfying the demands of a budget release. There are some great films in here and the entire collection comes highly recommended.
