Halloween Trilogy 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman October 11, 2023

Universal has released a large, but impressively assembled, three-film SteelBook collection featuring the three most recent Halloween films. The disc contents are identical to the original wide releases, which are linked below. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the case and the SteelBooks' look and feel. Note that these films have all enjoyed previous SteelBook issues, and some more than one; please click here, here, here, here, and here to see those.

This is definitely not going to save any shelf space, but for the serious neo-Halloween fan, that's not a bad thing because the outer shell that the SteelBooks ship in looks great. Of course, orange and black are the predominant colors everywhere around the case and the SteelBooks themselves (the exterior, anyway). The large outer shell, which is reminiscent of those housing the Rambo and Batman SteelBook collections, measures approximately 7.5" high by 5.75" wide by just under 4" deep. There is a substantial amount of extra space in every direction, but this thing makes up for its bulk with its beauty. It's glossy, hard, and isn't going to jostle the cases inside were it to fall. The three discs slide into individual heavy-duty foam padded slots, and there is plenty of finger and thumb room to pull them out. They fit snuggly, and there is a small cutout for thumbs and fingers on either end. The front of the case features a knife-wielding Michael Meyers in attack pose on the front. He's firmly on the right, and an ominous orange sky appears behind him, as do a few bare tree branches. The back panel is a little less foreboding. It's still a black-and-orange image, but it depicts costumed trick-or-treaters walking down Haddonfield's still serene sidewalks. The spine features the words "HALLOWEEN TRILOGY" in massive white block letters, underneath of which in smaller orange type are the film titles. The same appears on the top.

The SteelBooks themselves are glossy and each shares similar design aesthetics. Outside, they are, like the larger shell, all black and orange. For the first film, Michael is simply seen in profile on the front, and he is seen facing forward with a knife in hand on the back, standing in front of bare trees. For Kills, the front depicts an image of the Strode house from the front at street level. The rear depicts Michael standing forward in front of a fire. For Ends, Laurie Strode is standing in profile looking to her left. On the rear, Michael is seen facing forward in the sewer/grate area where he lives in the film. If the three were lined up, the fronts would look like Michael and Laurie were facing off with the house in the middle. All three feature black-and-white imaged interiors. Halloween features Michael with a knife in hand, firmly on the left, with mostly blank space on the right (this SteelBook also houses the digital copy voucher and a numbered certificate of authenticity; the set is limited to 5,325 pieces). The Kills interior depicts Michael stabbing, and lifting, a firefighter, again firmly on the left side. The Ends interior image features Michael in profile on the far left and blank space on the right.

It's debatable if a pumpkin image might have been more effective on the outer shell, but regardless this is a good looking and very classy boxed set that fans are going to want as a centerpiece of their franchise, Horror, and SteelBook collections. There are no disc changes from previous releases, so this is entirely an exterior, packaging focused released, but it's of a high enough quality that it deserves serious consideration for a pricey double dip.
