Halloween Kills 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman September 20, 2022

Universal and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive SteelBook release for the 2021 Horror film 'Halloween Kills.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. Note that this is the second SteelBook release for the film in this calendar year. This is billed as an "alternate artwork" version. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

"Alternate" though the artwork may be, it is very similar to the previous release. The front image is identical except that it is black and white rather than red tinted. It does away with some of the red splatter all over the front as well, and the film's title on this SteelBook is now red rather than white. Otherwise, it's the same thing. The rear image is zoomed in but is otherwise the exact same image as the previous SteelBook issue: Michael's looming presence appears, here, center rather than bottom left. The same lights appear above him as on the other issue. The image is black and white and much of The Shape is lost to shadow. Some studio logos and legalese appear in white along the bottom. The spine is black with the film's title in silver block letters center. A Universal logo appears at the bottom.

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features a black-and-white image of Laurie Strode, firmly on the left, holding a bloody knife, walking towards the camera. A nearly blank background appears to further the image on the right. The difference here is that the background elements are red; on the old issue, they were black-and-white.

Halloween Kills 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

With very little difference this is a hard recommend to casual fans who already own the previous edition. I personally like this one better, and for die-hard franchise fans this is a must-add, and for those who missed the now out of print original release this is a fine opportunity to pick it up.
