Gushing Over Magical Girls is a magical-girl action-adventure anime series. Utena Hiiragi (Fūka Izumi) is obsessed with magical girls and the world these scantily clad or bare-naked girls live in. Utena loves nothing more than to spend all day long watching near-nude or nude magical girls. Utena enjoys being a “watcher” of the magical girls and it is her total obsession. Yet now she is suddenly presented with a contract to become a magical girl herself. Even so, the contract leads to Utena becoming the opposite of what she first imagined.

Now Utena is going to be an evil magical girl, fighting against the same magical girls she has come to worship from afar. Now Utena uses her sinister, evil, and kinky abilities to whip the other magical girls into shape with kinky fights to take them all on. Can Utena overtake Haruka Hanabishi (Kaori Maeda) and Venalita (Misato Fukuen) with her BDSM kinks and ensnare the girls with bondage and whippings? Being naughty never felt so nice.

The series lead character is an interesting one for a magical girl series. Utena Hiiragi has a thing for not only magical girls but she also becomes absorbed with her dark side – not only do pretty magical girls bring a smile to her face but so does BDSM and kink – the character has fun whipping these magical girls, binding them up, and tormenting them with some kink specialties. The kinky aspect of the character is something that adds some distinctiveness to the magical girl series and the genre.

The character designs by Yasuka Ōtaki (A Galaxy Next Door, Hazure Skill "Kinomi Master") are decent and well-done. Fans of “kawaii” magical girl anime designs may appreciate the bright and bubbly aesthetic of the main characters. The girls don bright colorful uniforms and are designed with an abundance of vivid costuming and wear for the characters. These elements stand out for the production.

The animation is reasonably well-done for the genre. The animation features solid art direction by Arisa Taira (A Galaxy Next Door, Hazure Skill "Kinomi Master") and chief animation direction by Yasuka Ōtaki (A Galaxy Next Door, Girls' Frontline). The animators did a good job with the art style. The vivid and colorful animation is brimming with energy and excitement. Fans of robust, colorful, and energetic hentai-light or hentai-esque anime will appreciate the colorful animation and the emphasis on the detailed magical girl transformations and compromising positions.

The cinematography by Ryō Kujirai (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean, A Galaxy Next Door) is one of the key highlights, too. The cinematography is vibrant, sunny, and effective. The aesthetic delivers the necessary ingredients for success. Fans of cotton-candy colorful magical girl anime series will be quite pleased with the emphasis on bright colors and lush cinematography.

The score composed by Akinari Suzuki (Giant Beasts of Ars, Redo of Healer), Johannes Nilsson (The Island of Giant Insects, Redo of Healer), and Yasuharu Takanashi (The Ambition of Oda Nobuna, Fairy Tail) is an effective part of the production. In fact, the score utilized the efforts of a few talented composers for the series. Takanashi is an especially solid composer with great experience on Fairy Tail. Fans of that particular anime series score will notice some of the strengths that are exhibited with this magical girl anime.

Written by Noboru Kimura (Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture, AMAIM Warrior at the Borderline), Gushing Over Magical Girls isn’t a showstopper in regards to script. This should come as no major surprise. The emphasis of the series is not on the storytelling. The scriptwriter is more concerned with getting the magical girls in a variety of entanglements and compromising positions.

Directed by Atsushi Ōtsuki (Kanokon: The Girl Who Cried Fox, To Love Ru: Darkness) and Tadato Suzuki (Fruits Basket, Peach Boy Riverside), Gushing Over Magical Girls is going to appeal predominately to magical girl anime fans who want a spicier magical girl anime with more of a light-hentai style. The anime has plenty of nudity and sexual scenarios throughout, with graphic sexuality – from the big transformation moments to the kinky BDSM scenes and the other scenarios in which the girls are assembled for sexual scenes displaying the girls in a variety of tight situations and outfits. Fans of explicit anime aimed to titillate are going to want to check out Gushing Over Magical Girls. After all, that’s the main audience for Gushing Over Magical Girls. For that fanbase, there’s something worth checking out.

Released on Blu-ray by Sentai Filmworks, Gushing Over Magical Girls is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high-definition in the original television broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The series features a quality high-definition presentation. The colors are robust and engaging on the release. The vibrant aesthetic makes a significant difference on the presentation quality. The release has superb encoding and detail.

One of the strengths of the Blu-ray disc format is the superior encoding option. Blu-ray disc can provide a superior video bit-rate to streaming services. For home theater enthusiasts and physical media fans looking for the absolute best in picture-quality, there can be an advantage. This might prove to be a notable advantage for fans of steamy magical girl anime series wanting more nude and scantily clad magical girls in compromising positions – wrapped up in BDSM kinks and other sexual scenarios at large. For fans of these kinky anime series, the picture-quality advantages might be a notable selling point for some.

The release is presented in Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 (with English subtitles). The sound direction by Satoshi Motoyama (The Ambition of Oda Nobuna, The Asterisk War: The Academy City on the Water) is well reproduced. The release does not include an English dubbed option. The lack of an English dubbed option is perhaps unsurprising as Sentai often likes to go-back and double or triple dip titles with a new dub or other features. Even so, the lack of an English dubbed option might deter some fans from making a purchase. Regardless, the original Japanese language audio option is well-done and provides crisp and detailed audio. The English subtitles are well- done and are free from egregious spelling or grammatical errors.

One of the best-selling points and advantages of Blu-ray and the physical media format is the superior audio encoding. Lossless audio encoding provides a more immersive soundstage for audiophiles and home theater enthusiasts wanting the best possible sound quality obtainable. For that audience, in particular those with expensive home-theater gear, there can be a notable quality boost for fans. Considering the kinky and steamy aspect of the series, one can expect to hear every loud moan with more detail and precision.

Unfortunately, the supplemental package on the release is somewhat lackluster on the whole. The set only includes a few standard bonus features. A more robust supplemental package is something that sometimes add considerable value to a release. Bonus features such as audio commentaries, cast interview, crew interviews, roundtable discussions, comic-con panels, photo galleries, art galleries, and other higher-quality supplements could have added some extra value to the release and made some fans more likely to opt for a purchase over streaming.

For fans of "hentai-light" anime made specifically for "mature" audiences the series will appeal the most. There is plenty of nudity and explicit sexual content. The Blu-ray release provides a solid high-definition presentation and lossless audio encoding. The only downside to the release is a lackluster supplemental package. Fans of the series should consider a purchase for ownership and a nice presentation of the series.
