Ein Leben in dunklen Höhlen und Gängen, das ist Alltag für den 14-jährigen Simon, der seine Eltern in jungen Jahren verloren hat. Die Erdoberfläche ist tabu, denn die Menschen glauben, dass dort kein Leben mehr möglich ist. Sie fürchten sich vor Erdbeben und gehen brav ihrer täglichen Arbeit nach. Simon hat die Aufgabe, bei der Vergrößerung der Höhle zu helfen und findet bei den Ausgrabungen einen mysteriösen Talisman, den er mitnimmt. Sein Freund Kamina hingegen will die Welt an der Oberfläche erkunden und überzeugt ihn, sich seiner "Gurren Brigade" anzuschließen. Doch bevor sie nach oben vorstoßen, dringt ein riesiger Gunman in ihren Lebensraum ein und will alles Leben zerstören. Nur durch die Hilfe einer Fremden namens Yoko gelingt es Simon, seinen eigenen Gunman "Lagann" zu aktivieren ...
