Jeremy Saulnier's thriller Green Room made lots of waves upon its release in 2015, shocking audiences with a visceral and violent story about an up-and-coming hardcore punk band's deadly standoff with neo-Nazis at a rural show in the Pacific Northwest. Strengthened by committed performances and even some well-placed stunt casting in the form of a certain former Starfleet captain, Green Room has held up very well and, unfortunately, feels more relevant than ever with the recent resurgence of "white power" assholes polluting our current public and political landscape.
For my thoughts on Second Sight's new 2160p/HDR10 (Dolby Vision compatible) transfer, please see my recent review of the Limited Edition combo pack. Bottom line: it's a very solid effort and as good as "just an upscale" gets.
The DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track featured here sounds more or less identical to the outstanding mix included on Lionsgate's 2016 Blu-ray, so please see that linked review for more details. Please note that Second Sight's release lacks optional Spanish subtitles, but retains a set of similar English (SDH) subs during the main feature only.
This one-disc release ships in a standard keepcase and features newly-commissioned artwork and a strong assortment of mostly new retrospective bonus features, many featuring participation from cast and crew members. They're listed below in name only; for full details, please see my recent review of the Limited Edition combo pack.
Jeremy Saulnier's visceral Green Room finds the skilled writer/director in fine form, with its thrilling subject matter and ruthless efficiency creating an extremely potent and harrowing atmosphere that won't be soon forgotten. Tightly constructed and very well-acted with an excellent original score, it's a fine effort that frequently flirts with greatness. Second Sight's new 4K UHD, available as this stand-alone release or as part of a deluxe Limited Edition combo pack, comfotably outpaces Lionsgate's 2016 Blu-ray with a finely-tuned upscaled 2160p/HDR10 transfer and a collection of thoughtful new extras. It's an essential purchase for die-hard fans, no matter which 4K version you choose.
