Good Will Hunting Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Jeffrey Kauffman August 24, 2012

Not even a year after Lionsgate first released Good Will Hunting on Blu-ray, they’ve deigned to go back to the well, releasing the film again with over an hour of new supplementary content, but (according to information provided by Lionsgate's PR firm) with the same transfer as before, and minus the digital copy that graced the first release. For my thoughts on the film and the video and audio quality, as well as the original slate of supplements which are also ported over to this release, as well as to see screencaps from the film, please click on this link:

For the additional supplementary material released on this version, see below.

Good Will Hunting Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.5 of 5

See the link above for information on the previously released supplements which have been ported over to this 15th Anniversary release. This version also contains this new material:

  • Reflecting on a Journey: Good Will Hunting 15 Years Later (HD; 1:02:14) is comprised of four featurettes: The Era of Good Will Hunting, Cast and Crew Spotlight, Academy Awards: A Winning Season and Life Goes On. This is a really compelling, in depth piece that features a lot of first person reminiscences (it's a bit odd to hear Damon and Affleck hold up Sylvester Stallone as their model for a star who had written and starred in his own films). They talk about "reverse engineering" the story to fit their needs as actors early in their careers. Gus Van Sant talks about his long relationship with Damon and how much he had grown by the time he made the film. There's a brief remembrance of how some people claimed that Affleck and Damon didn't actually write the film and the fake brouhaha when they won the Oscar. There's a little wistfulness in the section on how everyone's lives have changed since the film came out. It must be stated that Robin Williams has really aged quite a bit—suddenly, he's looking surprisingly old and maybe even a little frail, perhaps due to some of his publicized health issues.

  • Matt Damon Remembers Good Will Hunting (HD; 16:46). Damon talks about the huge impact the film had on his life and career, mentioning how it took him three or four years after the film just to "calm down" after how much his life exploded after its release.

Good Will Hunting Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Does Good Will Hunting deserve a double dip? That's no doubt going to depend on whether or not you are a big fan of the film. There's no denying that the new supplementary material is excellent, especially the four part featurette, but the truth is the first release had great supplements as well. One way or the other, as I mentioned in my review of the first release, the film has held up surprisingly well and remains as touching as it was when it first came out. Double dippers will have to weigh their options, but for those who have never bought the film previously, this is obviously the version to get. Highly recommended.
