Godzilla Minus One 4K (2023)
Shikishima, a surviving Kamikaze pilot, is attacked on Odo Island along with many war plane engineers by a gargantuan monster. After surviving, Shikishima, now on a personal mission, teams up with a large group of veterans to finally take down the monster known as Godzilla.

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard February 17, 2025Godzilla Minus One roars on to the 4K UHD disc format. The international blockbuster will appeal to Godzilla fans the world over with impressive filmmaking and technical merits. A must-see for true Godzilla aficionados. Godzilla Minus One received a resounding 12 different nominations (more nominations than any other feature-film released in 2023) during the 47th Japan Academy Film Prize (the Japanese Academy Awards). Godzilla Minus One was nominated for and won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects during the 96th Academy Awards ceremony.
Godzilla Minus One has received a deluxe 4K UHD steelbook edition. The steelbook is a special premium edition for collectors. The release is the most comprehensive release of the theatrical release version though it still does not contain the Godzilla Minus One Minus Color Black and White Version.

The release is presented in Dolby Atmos. The Japanese Dolby Atmos sound mix is presented with a 24 bit depth core from the lossless Dolby TrueHD sound mix (also present on the release and default for those not equipped with Atmos sound systems). The 4K UHD collector's edition comes in a gorgeous steelbook. The limited edition steelbook release has a fantastic cover-art design. The steelbook cover-art is impressive and is an iconic image of Godzilla. A fantastic cover with art that is beautiful. The steelbook looks great in hand. The cover-art is frame worthy and would look outstanding on a display stand.
If there are any nitpicks to the steelbook edition, it is that the steelbook was printed with a matte finish over a high-gloss finish. High-gloss finishes (often with embossing and/or debossing effects) feel a lot more premium in hand and are preferable for some collectors. The steelbook slipcover is also a bit flimsier than expected even though it has a nice matte-finish detail that is better than a average slipcover. Some collectors may wish to place the slipcover aside and simply display the steelbook sepetately as it is a better way to appreciate the incredible artwork on the release.

It is nice to see such an impressive release with a nice roster of supplemental features provided to fans. Nonetheless, there are some nitpicks worth pointing out. Despite an extensive supplemental package provided on the steelbook limited edition, Toho has decided to make certain bonus features exclusive to other editions of the feature-film. The supplements are not all-inclusive to this limited edition and some other releases (both domestic and international) have other supplements missing from this edition. Take, for example, the Anime Limited release in the United Kingdom (which provides some extras subtitled and not present on the U.S. release and/or not subtitled on the Japanese release).
The supplements were divided up with other editions – such as the "Watch Along Edition" with even more unique supplements. Likewise, the biggest omission, is Godzilla Minus One Minus Color (the black and white version of the presentation). Godzilla Minus One Minus Color is not provided on the steelbook limited edition and one will need to purchase at least one or more other 4K/Blu-ray editions to have a complete supplemental package.
Godzilla Minus One 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation
Godzilla Minus One is a must-see cinematic event. The release comes with limited edition steelbook packaging. The steelbook packaging design is exquisite with a stunning cover-art and it would look great on a steelbook display stand or on the shelf next to other limited-edition releases. If there is one nitpick to the limited edition steelbook edition, it is the lack of the Godzilla Minus One Minus Color black-and-white version (available separately). Highly recommended.
