Godzilla: King of the Monsters 3D Blu-ray Movie Review

A must-see in 3D: Godzilla roars his best with three-dimensions!

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard October 21, 2019

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is the best of the Godzilla films produced in North America to date. While the film might not be able to match the masterpiece that is the original Japanese Godzilla by director Ishirô Honda, the epic action and spectacle on display is insanely rewarding and absolutely breathtaking. Starring Kyle Chandler (Super 8), Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring), and Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), the film has a dramatic family story which unfolds while a battle of epic monsters simultaneously. The film's title star is the giant “king of the monsters” Godzilla (credited as himself in the end results, I might add). The “Big G” is joined by Mothra and King Ghidorah. One can't help but be blown away by the non-stop entertainment which is found within this first-rate Hollywood event film. It is such a thrill ride that it is all but guaranteed to have viewers glued to the very edge of their seats.

Are you ready to rumble?!

For more information and a complete take on the film please refer to the review by my colleague Randy Miller III. Please note that my rating on the film reflects my own opinion.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters 3D Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

Arriving on 3D Blu-ray with a 1080p MPEG-4 MVC encoded high definition presentation, Godzilla: King of the Monsters is a stunning action spectacle which is further enhanced by its first-rate 3D presentation. Though the film is not a native 3D presentation (filmed utilizing 3D cameras) the exceptional post-conversion process utilized was enormously successful and yields terrific results throughout. The quality of the 3D is first-rate with the final act of the film being truly mind-blowing with the epic scope of the cinematography being further enhanced by the stunning visuals on display. Godzilla towers into the sky above as if the giant monster is a real powerhouse right in front of one's very eyes. With some of the most epic battle sequences of 2019, Godzilla: King of the Monsters is a must-see event in 3D. It's because of films like this that 3D remains an essential filmmaker's tool. It's presentation adds enveloping depth that truly brings the "Big G" to life.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters 3D Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  5.0 of 5

The 3D presentation includes a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio surround sound presentation. Though the Dolby Atmos sound mix is only provided on the Blu-ray and 4K presentations, I was over-the-moon with the incredibly powerful sound mix on this release. The sound designers for Godzilla: King of the Monsters should be given major accolades for their tremendous efforts. With a stunningly immersive soundstage which uses full effect of the surround speakers and the LFE, the track is one of the best of the year for action-films and makes it sound as though Godzilla is (literally!) in the same room. Make no mistake: the lack of an Atmos track doesn't mean the DTS-HD MA audio is some kind of slouch in the sound department. An engaging, exciting, and superb mix on every level, the sound presentation deserves a perfect score.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters 3D Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.0 of 5

The release includes the same bonus-features to be found on the standard 2D Blu-ray disc (which is included in this 3D Blu-ray + Bluray + Digital combo pack). For more information on these extras, please refer to the review of the standard edition written by my colleague Randy Miller III.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters 3D Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

One of the most badass films of 2019, Godzilla: King of the Monsters is an adrenaline-rush of action-packed filmmaking which leaves one on the edge of their seat. The iconic mega-monster Godzilla is awe-inspiring in his epic battles in this downright stunning 3D film that packs a punch with its great special effects and outstanding pacing. The last act of the film is a masterstroke of action filmmaking with superb spectacle which absolutely blew me away and made the entire experience an essential one. There is no better way to experience the grand scale of Godzilla: King of the Monsters than with this downright stunning 3D presentation. An immersive experience which cannot be missed.
