Gladiator 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman June 17, 2020

Paramount and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive UHD SteelBook release for 2000's Oscar winning epic 'Gladiator.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Gladiator 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.5 of 5

This SteelBook is slick and glossy and will show fingerprints, but the lighter color scheme will mask the intensity. The front panel depicts a bent-over Maximus looking towards the right. His shield fully covers much of the right-hand side while his right hand holds his sword, pointed toward the right. An intensely bright background yields barely visible terrain and grandstands below and behind him, but the figure fills the vast majority of the frame. The film's title appears center in white block letters with Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe names in accompaniment above. There is a reflectiveness to several of the surfaces, including the sword, shield, and armor pieces. The rear panel depicts a classy image of Maximus walking upward from the pits towards the arena gates. Bright light shines down upon him, washing out the scene and rendering the sides practically invisible. The spine is a near-white color with the film's title in black, center. A Paramount logo appears at the top while Blu-ray and UHD logos as well as a "3-disc set" notice appear at the bottom.

Inside, the digital copy code floats; there are no left-hand-side tabs to hold it down. The UHD disc is situated on its own center hub on the left while the feature film and Blu-ray bonus discs are situated on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features a still from one of the epic battle scenes in the film in which Maximus battles both man and beast. The hero is far right, his foe slightly right of center, and a tiger is prominently growling on the left while another prowls in the background on the right. A crowd scene fills the space beyond.

Gladiator 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

It's been more than two full years since Gladiator first arrived on the UHD format, but better late than never for a stunning SteelBook release. Gladiator and companion release Braveheart stand as two of the nicer ones on the market. Very highly recommended.
