Overview

Ghost in the Shell (1995)

Set in the year 2029 and following World Wars III and IV, a Japanese-led Asian block dominates world affairs. The alliance maintains its international supremacy through its elite security force whose cybernetically enhanced operatives tackle an array of hi-tech terrorists and other threats to international security. These augmented agents can "ghost hack" (i.e., download their consciousness) via the now omnipresent internet into other machines and human/machine cross breeds. Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cybernetically augmented female agent, has been tracking a virtual entity known as the Puppet Master with her crack squad of security agents. The shape-shifting Puppet Master, a rogue creation of a rival agency of the security apparatus, has concluded that it is a life form in its own right, "born in sea of information," and requested political asylum and true physical existence in defiance of its creators.

Ghost in the Shell Blu-ray Movie Review

Ghost in the Steel Shell.

Reviewed by Martin Liebman March 19, 2017

Anchor Bay has once again brought the Anime favorite 'Ghost in the Shell' to Blu-ray. The film has been released before, once, and early on, in its "2.0" configuration and with supplements, and later with the theatrical cut and new A/V specs but no supplements. Has the studio simply ported over one of the two previous versions, or is this a brand-new release with the best of both worlds? Read on in the 'Supplements' section below for more information.

Ghost in the Shell Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  n/a of 5

Anchor Bay's SteelBook re-release of Ghost in the Shell is a straight repackage of the disc released in September 2014. Picture and sound, main menu appearance and options, and the lack of bonus features all carry over: it's new disc artwork and new packaging with a straight rehash of that Blu-ray.

SteelBook aficionados will still find this to be of some value. It's part of the "Mondo" collection, the 18th in the series. The Steelbook comes housed inside a transparent plastic slipcover (with protective film on top), adorned with silver lettering on the front -- movie title in the center, "Mondo Steelbook" on the bottom left corner, and the Blu-ray disc and digital HD logo positioned on the top left corner -- and color images, a critic blurb, a synopsis, cast and crew cluster, a tech spec box, and legalese scattered throughout the busier backside. The SteelBook itself is incredibly attractive, featuring Motoko Kusanagi amidst complex wiring and futuristic tech. The image was originally designed by Kilian Eng in celebration of the original Manga's 25th anniversary. Inside, the disc reproduces the front cover artwork while the inner printing features more complex technology.

A UV digital copy voucher is included with purchase.

Ghost in the Shell Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.0 of 5

This is an attractive SteelBook release, obviously a must-buy for those collecting the Mondo series. It's a disappointing release otherwise, a simple port of the 2014 disc with no new content on the disc proper. It's also certainly tying in to and hoping to capitalize on the buzz surrounding the upcoming live action Ghost in the Shell live-action film starring Scarlett Johansson.
