Get Carter Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Randy Miller III August 31, 2025

Hopefully never overshadowed by its lukewarm 2000 remake with Sylvester Stallone, Mike Hodges' 1971 classic crime drama Get Carter is now over 50 years old and still packs an incredible punch. The film stars Michael Caine in one of his career-best roles as ruthless London gangster Jack Carter, who's on the hunt for the man (or men) responsible for his brother's mysterious death in a car accident. Last released domestically by Warner Bros. as a decently-appointed 2014 Blu-ray, this remastered Blu-ray from Warner Archive (which is also available in a recommended 4K combo pack) has been lovingly assembled from elements created for BFI Video's 2022 outstanding Blu-ray edition.

For separate synopses and appreciations of the main feature, please see either Michael Reuben's review of the 2014 Blu-ray (linked above) or Dr. Svet Atanasov's 2022 review of BFI's 4K Limited Edition. I'm in total in agreement with their individual 4.5/5 ratings for this film and consider Get Carter a violent, vicious, and visceral genre classic that's well worth (re)discovering more than a half-century after its theatrical debut. It'll still ruffle a few feathers.

Get Carter Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  5.0 of 5

As implied earlier, Warner Archive's 1080p/SDR Blu-ray transfer is fundamentally identical to BFI Video's great 2022 remastered Blu-ray, which was itself sourced from the restoration created for their 4K Limited Edition and standard 4K edition. As seen in these ten direct-from-disc screenshots, this is an extremely film-like and faithful presentation with excellent fine detail, strong color representation, and an authentic veneer of film grain, making it a strong runner-up to the 4K disc and perfectly acceptable for those with small to medium-sized screens. The identical visual merits continue with disc encoding too, as videophiles will be pleased to know that duties in that department were handled by the ever-reliable Fidelity in Motion. (If you know, you know.) Not surprisingly, this one earns perfect marks.

Get Carter Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  5.0 of 5

Similarly, the DTS-HD 2.0 Master Audio mix presented here, which is a split-channel presentation of the original mono source, is also identical to BFI's 2022 releases and details are available at the review linked above.

English (SDH) subtitles are offered during the main feature only, not the extras listed below.

Get Carter Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.5 of 5

This one-disc release ships in a keepcase with poster-themed cover artwork; no inserts or slipcover are included.

The bonus features overwhelmingly mirror those found on BFI Video's 2022 4K Limited Edition and their standard edition; all are accounted for (and described in more detail in the linked review) except for two featurettes, a script gallery, and of course the Limited Edition's printed content, which means there's plenty to dig through here.

  • Audio Commentary #1 - An archival track recorded in 2000 with director Mike Hodges, cinematographer Wolfgang Suschitzky, and actor Michael Caine.

Get Carter Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Mike Hodges' Get Carter is a hugely influential British crime drama that passed the half-century mark a few years ago. Its anniversary was celebrated by UK-based BFI Video's outstanding 2022 4K Limited Edition and standard 4K edition, with separate remastered Blu-ray editions to match. While region-free and obviously English-friendly, those unable to import those discs have likely waited patiently for a domestic release... and now, your time has come. This Blu-ray is fine for those who aren't set up for 4K yet... but I'd sill recommend Warner Archive's two-disc 4K/Blu-ray combo pack over this stand-alone disc, as it contains both formats and is currently the cheaper option as of this review.
