His Oscar-wininng portrayal of war hero SERGEANT YORK, his thoughtful performance as a Quaker father in FRIENDLY PERSUASION, his serio-comic turn as Audrey Hepburn's love interest in LOVE IN THE AFTERNOON, and in one of his last roles, in the Western classic THE HANGING TREE.

Reviewed by Randy Miller III June 11, 2025Warner Archive seems to be stepping up their multi-disc collection efforts in recent months, and that's terrific news indeed for anyone looking to fill up their shelves on the cheap: these low-risk sets simply bundle together a quartet of like-minded titles in a space-saving format for half-dollars on the dollar. As its title implies, this sleek new Gary Cooper 4-Film Collection bundles together four already-released films starring the celebrated Western icon in a variety of roles, mostly from later in his career: 1941's Sergeant York, 1956's Friendly Persuasion, 1957's Love in the Afternoon, and 1959's The Hanging Tree, one of Cooper's final film roles and released only a year before his untimely death.

This four-disc set ships in a hinged keepcase with separate hubs for each disc. Like previous WAC multi-disc collections, this one simply repurposes existing poster-themed cover artwork as a four-piece collage. Several lightweight bonus features, identical to those from the previous Blu-rays linked above, can be found on each disc.

True to its title, Warner Archive's Gary Cooper 4-Film Collection bundles together a quartet of titles starring the beloved leading man: 1941's Sergeant York, 1956's Friendly Persuasion, 1957's Love in the Afternoon, and 1959's The Hanging Tree. Some are more successful than others, but all four are at least entertaining and fairly varied in tone which makes this a decent choice for established fans and newcomers alike. Their respective discs offer solid A/V presentations and a few lightweight bonus features to boot. Collectively, this is an inexpensive and space-saving way to fill out your classic film collection and thus comes Recommended... unless, of course, you own most of them already.
