Overview

Gandhi 4K (1982)

This acclaimed biographical drama presents major events in the life of Mohandas Gandhi (Ben Kingsley), the beloved Indian leader who stood against British rule over his country. Dedicated to the concept of nonviolent resistance, Gandhi is initially dismissed by English officials, including the influential Lord Irwin (John Gielgud), but eventually he and his cause become internationally renowned, and his gatherings of passive protest move India towards independence.

Gandhi 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Breathtaking...

Reviewed by Kenneth Brown April 30, 2025

Sony first released Director Richard Attenborough's timeless 1982 classic 'Gandhi' to the UHD format as an exclusive in the studio's prestigious Columbia Classics Collection boxed sets. This SteelBook release is very much in line with that four-disc 4K edition. Specifications include 2160p/HDR video and Dolby Atmos audio. This four-disc set includes the pair of Blu-ray discs originally released in 2012. The UHD version of the film is spread across two BD-100 discs.

Gandhi 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  4.5 of 5

Click here for full details on the many special features included with this 4-disc set. The SteelBook itself is gorgeous, with highly detailed painted artwork adorning the front and rear covers; the former a collage of the cast, the latter a more abstract piece, though just as striking. Inside, two discs are housed on either side of the interior (depicting a photo from the film) and a central hinged disc holder keeps the other two discs in place. Simple but sturdy, effective yet handsome. Ignore the arguably high pricepoint as best you can. This is a must-own 4K SteelBook.

Gandhi 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Liebman concludes, "Only the eyes can truly behold the majesty that is Gandhi on the UHD format. It's frankly breathtaking, and even this far into the format and after more than a dozen years of Blu-ray/UHD reviewing, a presentation as good as Gandhi still manages to impress and delight. It's absolutely of reference quality start to finish. Text just can't do it justice. The Atmos soundtrack is a treat, too, and while most of the supplements carry over from the previously issued Blu-ray, what's here is plenty good in a support capacity... Gandhi earns my highest recommendation."
