Fury 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Kenneth Brown June 25, 2025

Sony first released writer/director David Ayer's harrowing WWII drama Fury on 4K UltraHD in 2018 as part of its early foray into the format. This is virtually the same 2-disc release, albeit packaged in a handsome SteelBook, though that's hardly a criticism as the 2018 edition and its top tier audio and video remains a stunning addition to any collection. This SteelBook edition does feature Dolby Vision, although with such a subdued palette, I could not see any notable difference between it and the previous HDR10 version. The film stars Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Peņa, Jon Bernthal and Jim Parrack.

The film's story is little more than a frame through which the terrors of war, as they are inflicted on man, may be portrayed. A Sherman tank crew, one that's been together through many battles, has just lost one of its key members. The replacement is a young, completely green typist named Norman Ellison (Logan Lerman) whose hours of tank experience are equal to the number of times it looks like he's shaved in his life: zero. The veteran tank crew -- Don Collier (Brad Pitt), Boyd Swan (Shia LaBeouf), Trini Garcia (Michael Peņa), and Grady Travis (Jon Bernthal) -- is largely unwelcoming to the fresh recruit, fearing his inexperience will cost lives. The men partake in several clashes with the enemy while pushing deeper into German territory where they face the consequences of Hitler's "total war" strategy that sees his best SS troops, as well as forcibly recruited men, women, and children, putting up a final resistance against the surging allied forced pushing East towards Berlin.

Adding, "it's as emotionally graphic as it is outwardly graphic, a difficult film that studies the destruction of man's soul in the midst of his destruction of one another. The story is tight and complete, the visuals are astounding, and the acting is stellar."

Kudos to whomever heads Sony's SteelBook graphic design department. While Fury, like most Sony SteelBooks, merely utilizes production stills or images from the film, the artistry and striking quality of the photography is undeniable. Fury's front cover features a solemn Brad Pitt, leaning against the barrel of a tank, while the back cover features the entire main cast. The inner art includes even more actors in another terrific photo, with the 4K and standard Blu-ray discs sitting in a clear plastic tray. The spine of the SteelBook sets the title in white against the sky, popping out surprisingly well when sitting among other titles on the shelf, as most SteelBooks seem to have darker cover art.

Fury 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Fury is an incredible war film that should be on every physical media collector's shelves. Sony's 4K release -- soon available in this striking SteelBook packaging -- does the movie justice in every way, from video quality to Dolby Atmos punch to must-watch extras. If you don't already own Fury in 4K, or are a SteelBook fanatic, this purchase is a no-brainer.
