Frozen II 3D Blu-ray Movie Review

A must-see in 3D: Frozen II is a breeze!

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard July 21, 2020

An imaginative and exciting follow-up to the runaway hit Frozen, Frozen II picks up after the events of the first film and takes viewers on a new (magical carpet?) ride. Our beloved group of Anna (Kristen Bell), Elsa (Idina Menzel), Olaf (Josh Gad), Kristoff (Jonathan Groff), and Sven set out to find the hidden truth behind the unique powers of Elsa. Danger, adventure, and charming songs written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez can be found in good measure. Can the mystery of Elsa's abilities come to light? Will there be a breakout song as memorable as “Let It Go” in the process? (Will Olaf survive to see another winter or melt before our eyes?) Grab on to your popcorn, get ready to belt out some tunes, and be charmed away by the exceptional follow-up to Frozen.

"Should we start singing now? Or let it go?"

Frozen II 3D Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  5.0 of 5

Arriving on Blu-ray from Disney, Frozen II features a 1080p MPEG-4 MVC encoded high definition presentation in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.39:1 widescreen. This is yet another first rate presentation from Disney (proving yet again that there is real life left in 3D as a viable format for viewing films for many years to come). The presentation is a technical marvel: there are no signs whatsoever of crosstalk or ghosting when viewed on the magnificent OLED65E6P. The 3D looks radiant and mesmerizing. Depth is exceptional and the quality of 3D layering adds a great deal to the experience. Having seen Frozen II in IMAX (2D) during the theatrical run, the 3D presentation is the clear winner for immersion.

While fans of intense pop-out effects might have wanted more burst-out-of-the-screen moments, there are still some nice pop out effects sprinkled throughout the film to enhance a few scenes (such as when Elsa glides across the ocean). The 3D never feels gimmicky in implementation. Olaf would certainly approve. Viewers looking to find an exceptionally crisp and clear 3D presentation with stunning depth and accuracy will not be disappointed in the slightest.

Frozen II 3D Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  3.5 of 5

The 3D release includes an impressive and sublimely immersive DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 surround sound mix. Though my impression of the audio track was a bit more favorable than it was for my Blu-ray.com colleague Martin Liebman, the lossless track lacks a bit in LFE. Please refer to the standard Blu-ray review for more details.

Optional English SDH subtitles (for the deaf and hard of hearing) are provided.

Frozen II 3D Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.5 of 5

The Blu-ray release includes the same selection of supplemental features present on the standard 2D Blu-ray disc. For more information on the provided bonus features, please refer to the review by my colleague Martin Liebman.

Frozen II 3D Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Frozen II is an entertaining follow-up to the instant Disney classic that swept the world by storm. The songs are just as inspired, the animation is breathtaking, and the story takes things in a new and exciting direction. The 3D presentation is jaw-dropping and is easily the most immersive way to experience the film. Hats off to Disney for proving once again why the 3D format remains the best way to see a blockbuster hit like this one. The 3D Blu-ray release is top-notch and comes highly recommended.
