Friday the 13th Part 3 3D Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard June 17, 2025

Friday the 13th Part 3 is one of the best installments of the popular horror franchise. Produced by Frank Mancuso Jr. (Species, Ronin), Friday the 13th Part 3 is based on characters created by Victor Miller, Ron Kurz, and Sean S. Cunningham. Originally released on 3D Blu-ray by Shout Factory, Friday the 13th Part 3 has been revisited and upgraded on 3D Blu-ray by Turbine Media (with some improvements to the 3D transfer).

Executive produced by Lisa Barsamian (Friday the 13th Part 2, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter), Friday the 13th Part 3 is the only 3D feature in the franchise. Friday the 13th Part 3 is one of the most popular installments in the horror franchise. Friday the 13th Part 3 marks the first appearance of Jason’s iconic hockey mask. Originally intended as the conclusion to a trilogy of Friday the 13th films, but the massive box office and cult fanbase led to the franchise expanding.

Jason (Richard Brooker) doesn’t like living and breathing human beings. Jason prefers dead bodies. A simple life just isn’t the way of living for the serial killer with a thirst for blood.

Jason brings a whole host of weapons with him this go-around (sometimes even picking up weapons laying around on the floor). The bevy of weapons being used for Jason’s murderous rampage include a Machete, harpoon gun, pitchfork, axe, poker, sewing needle, cleaver, and his own villainous hands. Can Jason up his kill count and take out as many hapless victims as possible before the night is over?

A group of friends arrive at a beautiful camp near the legendary Crystal Lake – the lake with a history. These friends weren’t prepared for the onslaught of blood – nor for the fury of Jason. The friends include the pregnant hipster Debbie (Tracie Savage), sex-pot Vera Sanchez (Catherine Parks), Debbie’s boyfriend, Andy (Jeffrey Rogers), goofball Shelly (Larry Zerner), and pot-heads Chuck (David Katims) and Chili (Rachel Howard). Can any of the friends survive the bloodbath of Jason Voorhees?

The cast does a terrific job in Friday the 13th Part 3. There are a lot of worthwhile performances in the feature. The entire ensemble has fun with their respective roles. Tracie Savage and Catherine Parks provide plenty of sex appeal. The gorgeous women of Friday the 13th Part 3 add a lot to the film – sensual and seductive.

The production features art direction by Robb Wilson King (Swamp Thing, The Osterman Weekend) and the efforts add a lot to Friday the 13th Part 3. Friday the 13th Part 3 also features production designs by Robb Wilson King (Total Recall, Tombstone). The old-school style is perfect for the horror franchise – design elements are true to the genre and manage to showcase the world of Crystal Lake and the accompanying cabin.

Edited by George Hively (Terror Out of the Sky, Savage Dawn), Friday the 13th Part 3 is well-paced mayhem. The editing is tight and concise. The horror filmmaking is beautifully paced and the fun execution of the stunts is something that impresses in spades – with the editors assembling the filmmaking perfectly.

Featuring an original score composed by Harry Manfredini (Friday the 13th, DeepStar Six), Friday the 13th Part 3 has a perfect score. The music is incredible and adds so much to the filmmaking. Considered one of the most iconic horror soundtracks of all time, Friday the 13th Part 3 delivers in spades and is a top-notch horror score. The sense of dread and unease is sublime. The music perfectly highlighting the chaotic rage of Jason.

The cinematography by Gerald Feil (Silent Madness, Savage Dawn) is remarkable and one of the most beautiful qualities of Friday the 13th Part 3. Friday the 13th Part 3 has lush old-school cinematography and the visual sensibilities help make the horror filmmaking feel all the more engaging. Feil is an impressive cinematographer with a strong visual sensibility and approach to filmmaking. An outstanding effort and one that is perfect for the horror genre.

Written by Martin Kitrosser (Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Friday the 13th: A New Beginning) and Carol Watson (Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, Meatballs Part II), Friday the 13th Part 3 features an excellent screenplay. The script is one of the greatest strengths of the film. Friday the 13th Part 3 manages to have great character moments throughout. The dialogue is well written, too. The outstanding horror screenwriting provides great creativity to the production.

Directed by Steve Miner (Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, Friday the 13th Part 2), Friday the 13th Part 3 is one of the best horror sequels in film history. Friday the 13th Part 3 is one of the best films in the entire franchise and some consider it the greatest of the original trilogy. Miner is a great director and he has incredible vision for the franchise. Friday the 13th Part 3 is even better than Friday the 13th Part 2 – another film in the series directed by Miner. Friday the 13th Part 3 is as close as one can get to masterpiece-level for horror sequels. The filmmaking is endlessly creative and gripping.

Friday the 13th Part 3 3D Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

Released on 3D Blu-ray by Turbine Media, Friday the 13th Part 3 3D is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 MVC encoded high- definition in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1 widescreen. The high-definition presentation is exceptional on the release. The transfer appears naturally filmic and the fine film grain adds a lot to the experience. The old-school cinematography and visuals are well-reproduced on the release.

The 3D presentation is outstanding and provides so much creativity to Friday the 13th Part 3. The original 3D Blu-ray release by Shout Factory was one met with a myriad of criticisms by 3D fans for having a few errors during the 3D transfer. As such, the original release was met with some controversy within the enthusiast community. Turbine Media decided to go back to the 3D presentation and work on resolving the errors and complaints of fans. The result is a more fine-tuned 3D presentation meant to address some of the original errors and shortcomings on the Shout Factory 3D Blu-ray.

As one of the most requested classic 3D films – and one of the most requested 3D films to be revisited on the 3D Blu-ray format with a new presentation – Turbine Media spent extra time and effort to ensure the original theatrical 3D presentation was preserved and any slight errors or inconsistencies that were previously unaddressed would be resolved. The end result is a pleasing upgrade for 3D enthusiasts wanting to own the most definitive home media presentation of the horror classic. It is a must-own release for anyone who wants the best presentation available of Friday the 13th Part 3 3D.

Friday the 13th Part 3 3D Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  5.0 of 5

The release includes a selection of lossless audio options: English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround sound and English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono. It is wonderful to see a nice selection of audio options provided on the disc. The original audio presentation will be the preference for a certain segment of audiences. For others, the 5.1 surround sound mix is the go-to option. Comparing the options, the original is the must authentic sounding to the original source but the 5.1 mix is both aggressive, engaging, and well-done. The 5.1 mix is outstanding and far better than a typical 5.1 surround presentation for a classic horror. The surrounds actively use sound effects for the kill sequences well and the score is well integrated into the soundstage. The end result is a great presentation. Either option will work for enthusiasts but it is nice to have a choice between either version.

One of the great benefits of a physical media collection is the lossless audio encoding. Blu-ray offers lossless audio – something superior to streaming video services. Streaming video services only offer lossy (non-lossless) audio encoding. For audiophiles and home theater enthusiasts with nice audio equipment and gear, the difference is sometimes substantial. In the case of Friday the 13th Part 3, Turbine Media provides an exceptional lossless presentation that provides theater quality high-resolution sound.

Friday the 13th Part 3 3D Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  n/a of 5

Turbine Media does not provide any supplemental materials on the 3D Blu-ray. Turbine Media decided to focus their 3D Blu-ray output on prioritizing higher video and audio bit-rates and encoding specifically for the 3D presentation. If one wants supplemental materials, Turbine Media considers the possibility fans may own other Blu-ray editions with extras available separately from the 3D edition.

Friday the 13th Part 3 3D Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Friday the 13th Part 3 3D is one of the best horror films of all time. For fans of the Friday the 13th film franchise, Friday the 13th Part 3 is an essential masterpiece of the horror genre. The filmmaking is exquisite and there are many great sequences throughout the film. Director Steve Miner (Friday the 13th Part 2) is a master of horror and made two of the best horror films of all time with the Friday the 13th film series.

The 3D Blu-ray release provides an exceptional 3D presentation – with Turbine Media returning to the somewhat controversial Shout Factory 3D Blu-ray presentation – resolving the errors fans complained about and noted as inconsistencies with the original 3D theatrical presentation. For enthusiasts wanting the most definitive 3D Blu-ray presentation of Friday the 13th: Part 3, Turbine has met the demand of fans with a great transfer that restores the 3D to its original theatrical glory. A must-own 3D Blu-ray release. Highly recommended.
