Friday the 13th Part 2 Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman March 28, 2021

Paramount has issued a new SteelBook packaging variant for the 1981 Slasher sequel 'Friday the 13th Part 2.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the 2009 wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Paramount' SteelBook is of the textured, matte variety that will not slide around in the hand or display handling fingerprints, which is a good thing because black, where those pesky fingerprints would show, is the primary color in play. The front panel features a familiar bit of simple artwork with the glowing outline of the killer Jason seen from about the chest to the knees. He's holing a bloody axe in his left hand down to his side. The film's title appears in prominent, diagonally oriented letters along the front in white with the words "Part II" dripping in blood. It's very similar to the wide release image artwork in form but there are some notable differences (background color, the gleam on the axe, and "2" rather than "II" in the title on that old release). The back panel features a quote in white text on black background filling the top half: "You're doomed! You're all doomed!" in the immortal words of Crystal Lake's "Crazy Ralph" who can be seen in red riding a bike along a flat path of blood, blood which is dripping in streaks towards the bottom (a few streaks extend all the way to, and around, the bottom of the case). A Paramount logo and legalese appear bottom left and a model number bottom right. The spine features the film's title, center, with "Friday the 13th" in white and "Part II" completely in blood red. A Paramount logo has been placed at the top and a Blu-ray logo at the bottom.

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The lone Blu-ray disc is situated on a center hub on the right below which is a black background with this text in white, slightly at a diagonal: "The body count continues." On the left, shaded blood red, is an image of a hooded Jason, his right arm up and ready to grab a victim.

This is a nice enough SteelBook: it's simple with no real fuss, though without much artistic creativity going for it. It's for hardcore SteelBook and franchise collectors only, though; the disc is identical to Paramount's 2009 issue and most such fans probably already own the Shout! boxed set which features a superior version.
