Scream Factory via Shout! Factory has released the 1981 Horror franchise film 'Friday the 13th Part 2' to Blu-ray with a fresh 4K scan and a pair of lossless soundtrack options. Several supplements are included as well, carrying over the extras from the old 2009 Paramount release and adding a few new ones. It's an excellent Blu-ray, well superior to the Paramount disc. It is currently only available in the exciting, and limited, Friday the 13th Collection which includes all 12 films featuring killer Jason Voorhees as well as two bonus discs.
This is another excellent presentation from Shout! Factory. Via a fresh 4K scan, Friday the 13th Part 2 looks every bit as good as its predecessor. Grain retention is steady and attractive. It's a bit more dense in some places as opposed to others, but there's never any serious fluctuation. Black levels lighten a bit in spots -- look at a scene at the 9:55 mark early in the film for an example -- but even there the effect is minimal. Mostly, and critically through the third act, blacks are tremendous: deep, absorbing, and true, a necessary and critical component to the movie's atmosphere. The small town down near Camp Crystal Lake early in the film, the same from the original film, reveals a gorgeous lay of the land. Sharp, effortless details and exciting colors are the norm, including natural greenery, a green pay phone, a red and blue Exxon sign, and even the gray pavement all appear perfectly accurate. The camp is alive with firm wooden details, terrific colors, and superior flesh tones in any light. Skin details are excellent, clothing definition is sure, and the grain holds steady throughout. Red blood is intense, wooden tones are true to color, and there's no room for disappointment. The print is meticulous and the encode is flawless. Like its predecessor, it's practically perfect.
As with Friday the 13th, Part 2 includes a pair of English audio options: the original 2.0 mono track in lossless DTS-HD Master Audio and an expanded DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless presentation. The 2.0 mono track is very good but it's missing the fullness and clarity inherent to the 5.1 offering. With the mono track, dialogue sometimes struggles to image to the center (listen to the campfire scene at the 25-minute mark); such is not an issue with the 5.1 track. Musical definition lags behind the more robust and dynamic 5.1 offering, which finds excellent front stretch and natural surround wrap. Effects are not as hearty in mono, either. For example, thunder cracks and rain falls in chapter eight to excellent spacial effect in 5.1 but struggle to find blended balance and clarity in mono. What the effect lacks in true life fidelity, even in 5.1, it more than makes up for with sheer presence and immersion. Ambience, like birds and croaking frogs, enjoy more precise placement in 5.1, too. The mono track is plenty effective and a worthwhile listen for a closer approximation of the original mix but fans with the systems to enjoy it will likely come back to the 5.1 mix for repeat viewings; it's just a more engaging, richer, more polished presentation.
This Blu-ray release of Friday the 13th Part 2 includes several new supplements as well as carryover content from the 2009 Blu-ray release.
See
below for what's included. New material is marked as such. Please click here for coverage of the carryover content. Note that the
only
extra from the Paramount disc that did not carry over here is Jason Forever
which can be found in one of the above-linked
collection boxed set's bonus discs. As it ships in the Friday the 13th collection box set, no DVD or digital copies are
included and the release does not include a slipcover.
Fans are in for a treat with the Friday the 13th Part 2 disc. The film is solid, the new 4K scan at 1080p flirts with perfection, and the 5.1 lossless soundtrack is superb (and kudos to Shout! for including the original mono track, too, which is fine in its own right). Add in the new and returning bonuses and all of the other goodies in the boxed set and it's a fan's dream come true. Very highly recommended.
