Free Guy 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Randy Miller III October 16, 2021

Now available alongside the standard 4K and Blu-ray editions, Disney and Target have collaborated on an exclusive 4K variant of the 2021 film Free Guy. Like many of its recent Disney exclusives, however, it amounts to little more than a deluxe slipcover with a few packaging extras. A Best Buy Steelbook is also available for collectors of that format.

For a film synopsis and critique of Free Guy, please see Martin Liebman's review of the standard 4K disc.

Free Guy 4K Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  5.0 of 5

For thoughts on Free Guy's 2160p, HDR-enhanced 4K transfer (which turned out to be surprisingly underwhelming), please see Martin Liebman's review of the standard 4K disc. Please note that this Target exclusive edition, like the Best Buy Steelbook, also includes a Blu-ray copy of the film.

Free Guy 4K Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.0 of 5

For thoughts on Free Guy's Dolby Atmos mix, please see Martin Liebman's review of the standard 4K disc.

Free Guy 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  2.5 of 5

This two-disc release ships in a standard keepcase that's identical to the standard 4K edition, which includes a Digital Copy redemption slip and the same assortment of bonus features found on the included Blu-ray copy. Again, the only actual difference here is the slipcover itself.

  • Exclusive Packaging - The exclusive slipcover features alternate cover art that folds out to reveal a few key locations and items from the film. Tucked inside the slipcover sleeve are two foil-enhanced mini prints featuring the cover art and a second image of Guy, coffee in hand, looking over Free City from a bird's-eye view. The prints are very attractive with a nice metallic sheen; those familiar with comic books will find them similar in appearance and feel to those "chromium covers" which were all the rage in the 1990s and early 2000s. Also included is a cardboard "easel" to display one of them, but it's a cheap design that's not very well thought out or functional. The prints are cool; otherwise, this isn't a particularly great design scheme and the front image lacks punch -- I'd have preferred the outer slipcover to take on that cool metallic sheen instead.

Free Guy 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

Disney's Free Guy is a good-not-great film that nonetheless might appeal more to die-hard gamers. Unfortunately, the 4K presentation is also somewhat lacking, with neither the 2160p transfer or Dolby Atmos mix earning especially high marks. Likewise, Target's exclusive 4K edition doesn't impress other than the two foil-enhanced prints tucked inside, which makes this something of an underwhelming package overall. For die-hard collectors and fans only.
