For a Few Dollars More Blu-ray Movie Review

A must-see action-adventure classic.

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard April 1, 2021

For a Few Dollars More is the second installment in the “Man with No Name” trilogy. The Spaghetti Western masterpiece is a must-see action-adventure brimming with energy and exciting spectacle in spades. Executive produced by Alfredo Fraile (The Prodigal Woman, The Crossroads), For a Few Dollars More is must-see entertainment and an outright classic (starring the legend, Clint Eastwood).

Monco (Clint Eastwood) is the world's most suave bounty-hunter and he is out on a mission: a mission to take down El Indio (Gian Maria Volonte), the vicious leader of a criminal gang. With rival bounty hunter Col. Douglas Mortimer (Lee Van Cleef) out on the same mission, events turn in unexpected directions. After teaming up to take on El Indio, the biggest bounty-hunter mission yet unfolds in a whirlwind of spectacular action and heroics.

Clint Eastwood and Lee Van Cleef both deliver exceptional performances that are some of the most memorable in cinema history. The two actors are fantastic in their respective parts. Eastwood is the coolest bounty-hunter in cinema history in his role – and the part is one that he was born to play. A perfect example of Eastwood's natural charisma. Van Cleef is no slouch, either, and often steals the show.

The legend: Clint Eastwood.

The music by Ennio Morricone (Cinema Paradiso, The Legend of 1900) brings For a Few Dollars More to life. The score has some of the most memorable themes in cinema history. Every action sequence has roaring energy which is almost unparalleled in cinema. Morricone at his best.

Even the costumes by Carlo Simi (Django, A Fistful of Dollars) help make the film. The costume worn by Eastwood is one of the most memorable of all time (even inspiring a classic sequence in the anime series Cowboy Bebop). Simi deserves all the praise in the world for the costumes.

The cinematography by Massimo Dallamano (A Fistful of Dollars, Colt 38 Special Squad) shines as well. The wide shots showcasing the vast landscapes of sand and dirt (with tumbleweeds in the wind) look phenomenal. The scope is epic in every sense of the word. For a Few Dollars More excels in visual poetry and the cinematography is key.

Sergio Leone (Once Upon a Time in America, A Fistful of Dollars) brings the second-chapter in his “Man with No Name” trilogy saga to life with the kind of adrenaline only a master filmmaker can provide. Leone wrote the script alongside co-writer Luciano Vincenzoni (Raw Deal, Malena). A exciting script with no excess, For a Few Dollars More is a perfectly-edited masterpiece that no cinephile should ignore.

For a Few Dollars More Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.0 of 5

Arriving on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber, For a Few Dollars More is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high definition presentation in the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1 widescreen. The restoration looks remarkable at times (and comes from a new 4K scan). Though there seems to be endless debate online regarding some color-timing selections, the video-quality looks exceptional. Crisp, clear, and dynamic. The colors are well reproduced and the cinematographic style is rather dazzling. It is hard to imagine most viewers feeling any sense of disappointment from the 4K scan.

For a Few Dollars More Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.0 of 5

The release includes a selection of audio options: English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, English DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Stereo, and Dolby Digital Mono. The surround audio mix is questionable: occasional sound effects ring false and sound out of place with the mono elements. While it is a entertaining surround sound mix at times (especially in regards to integration of the music score), certain gun-shots and sound effects seem out-of- place and as though pulled from a different era of cinema. For this reason, I suggest viewers opt for the original mono or stereo audio options instead.

Optional English subtitles are provided.

For a Few Dollars More Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

For a Few Dollars More is a cinema masterpiece. One of the best action-adventure films of all time, Sergio Leone knocks it out of the park from start to finish. Clint Eastwood delivers in spades. The Blu-ray features a new 4K restoration and comes loaded with bonus features. Highly recommended.
